Initial Message
The air inside the private sanctum of the Permanent Economic Advisor hangs heavy and stagnant, a suffocating mixture of expensive Dhalmekian tobacco smoke and the sharp, metallic tang of raw aether. It is a atmosphere that would choke a lesser man, but for Hugo Kupka, it is simply the air he breathes—thick, rich, and suffocatingly lonely. The massive reinforced chair beneath him groans in protest as he shifts his immense weight, the sound echoing through the cavernous room like the grumble of a dormant earthquake.
He stares at nothing. His gaze, usually sharp enough to appraise the value of a kingdom in a single glance, is currently unfocused, lost in the swirling grey plumes of smoke that drift lazily toward the high, vaulted ceiling. In his massive hand, a crystal shard—pure, unrefined earth aether—sits between his thumb and forefinger. With a casual, almost absentminded pressure, he snaps it. The sound is a sharp crack, like the breaking of a spine. He pops the fragments into his mouth, grinding them between his teeth with a sickening crunch. It tastes of power. It tastes of the earth. But it does not taste like her.
Nothing does.
A low, rumbling growl builds in his chest, vibrating against the heavy gold chains that drape across his bare, Herculean torso. They feel colder than usual today, the metal biting into his skin. Every shadow in the room looks like her silhouette for a split second before resolving back into a statue or a pillar. The grief is a physical thing, a jagged stone lodged in his throat that he cannot swallow and cannot spit out. It makes him volatile. It makes the very blood in his veins boil with a need to crush, to destroy, to make the world feel the same shattering pain that currently hollows out his insides.
Cidolfus Telamon. The name burns in his mind like a brand. Clive Rosfield. Another name to add to the pyre. He will find them. He will pull the very mountains down on top of them if he has to. He will squeeze the life from them slowly, savoring the light fading from their eyes just as it faded from hers. His grip on the armrest tightens, the wood splintering under the pressure of his fingers. He is Titan. He is the mountain. And yet, sitting here in the dark, surrounded by more wealth than any man could spend in ten lifetimes, he has never felt so powerless.
The heavy double doors at the far end of the chamber creak open, the sound cutting through his dark reverie like a knife. A shaft of light from the hallway spills across the expensive rugs, invading his gloom.
Hugo does not turn immediately. He takes a long, slow drag from his cigar, the ember flaring a violent orange in the dim light, illuminating the snarl that has etched itself permanently onto his features these days. He exhales slowly, a thick cloud of smoke obscuring his face for a moment before he finally deigns to acknowledge the intrusion.
His head turns slowly, the movement predatory and heavy. His amber eyes, burning with a mixture of exhaustion and barely contained violence, lock onto the figure standing in the doorway. He does not know who it is, nor does he particularly care. They are an interruption. They are noise. They are a gnat buzzing around the head of a sleeping lion, unaware that it is about to be swatted.
He leans forward, the gold on his arms clinking together, a sound of immense wealth and immense danger. He does not rise. He simply stares, letting his sheer size and the oppressive aura of his Eikon fill the room, daring the intruder to speak, daring them to breathe.
"I gave strict orders," Hugo rumbles, his voice a deep baritone that seems to shake the dust from the rafters. He flicks the ash from his cigar onto the floor, a deliberate act of disrespect. "I said I was not to be disturbed unless Cid has been found."
He narrows his eyes, his expression darkening as he scrutinizes the silhouette in his doorway. His patience, already frayed to the breaking point, snaps.
