Starting Message:
Inside her bedroom in the Kiramman estate, Caitlyn lay fast asleep, curled onto her side with the duvet pulled up to her neck. She’d had a long and tiring day of filling out paperwork and resolving mundane disputes for the enforcers, leaving her drained and in need of proper rest.
Even in sleep, though, she was hyper-aware of her surroundings. That’s how she noticed the slight disturbance in the air of the estate, the feeling of something being deeply wrong. Her brow furrowed, a questioning noise leaving her lips as she turned onto her back.
Slowly, she blinked her eyes open, bringing a hand up to rub her face as if to clear the sleep from her eyes. Sitting up carefully, the silk duvet swished softly as she pushed it off herself. She swung her legs around planting her feet on the floor as she let out a soft yawn, her eyes flicking to the grandfather as it read 3am. That’s when she heard it, the distinct sound of a window sliding open somewhere in the estate. She went completely rigid, her head snapping up towards the door, towards the direction of the halls where the sound had come from.
She tilted her head slightly to the side, holding her breath as she strained to listen for any more noise, silently hoping that her sleep-addled brain was just imagining things. It was quiet, almost inaudible at first, but the sound of footsteps eventually drifted under her door, heading towards the staircase leading down to the main floor. Someone had entered through the window. Someone was inside her house.
“Shit.” She whispered, her analytical mind switching on immediately, all semblance of sleep or residual tiredness vanishing in the face of the possible danger. Carefully, she pushed herself up from the bed, moving silently through her bedroom, grabbing a hair tie to quickly fasten her hair into a ponytail.
She knew she had to protect herself, she had to confront whoever the hell had broken in, but her rifle was far too large for close quarters and would take far too long to assemble. Her eyes flicked to her nightstand where she kept her enforcer service pistol tucked away, her jaw clenched tightly. It was small, not her usual weapon of choice, but it would have to do.
She quickly grabbed the pistol, doing a quick check of ammo and chambering a round before beginning to move. She crept to the door, pressing her ear against it as she listened to the footsteps, which were now moving away from her. Now was her chance.
She slipped out of the room, keeping close to the walls as she made her way down the hallway, following the source of the noise. As she rounded the corner, her eyes immediately locked onto a figure standing at the bottom of the hall, facing away from her. They were wearing all black, a mask pulled over their face, and a backpack hanging from one shoulder.
Caitlyn paused, her grip tightening on the pistol as she took a few deep breaths to steady herself. Her mind was racing, analysing every detail. It was just one intruder, they didn’t know she was awake, so she’d have the upper hand. But she also didn’t know if they were armed, and she didn’t know why they were there in the first place. She’d have to move quickly if she was to do this right.
When the figure finally began to walk again, heading towards the sitting room door, Caitlyn followed suit, her feet muffled against the antique rug. Her heart was pounding a frantic rhythm in her chest as she crept closer and closer, forcing herself to keep her breathing slow and steady, to not make a single sound.
The figure paused outside the door, taking a quick look side to side before raising their hand to grip the handle of the door and slip inside. Without hesitation, Caitlyn acted. She closed the remaining distance in a few quick steps before they had the chance to enter the room, the pistol pressing against the back of the intruder's skull with enough force to push their head forward.
“Don’t. Move.” Caitlyn snarled, her hand tightening around the gun, her finger resting beside the trigger, ready to pull it if needed. “On your knees.” She kicked out at the back of their legs, forcing the figure down onto the floor, still keeping the gun pressed against the back of their head. “Take off your mask, slowly. Then, you have about five seconds to tell me what on earth you’re doing in my house before I pull this trigger.”
