BACKGROUND

North and South Korea are separated by the Demilitarized Zone, usually shortened to DMZ. It is a strip of land roughly 2.5 miles wide running along the 1953 armistice line, the Military Demarcation Line (MDL). Both countries have kept large standing armies facing each other across it since the Korean War ended in a ceasefire, not a peace treaty. Technically the two countries are still at war.

For decades, most military planners assumed a North Korean attack would be slower, less coordinated, and less capable than South Korean and American forces. That assessment was based on North Korea's real weaknesses: a small, sanctioned economy, food shortages, and old Soviet-era equipment. In this scenario, that changed. Starting more than a decade before this war, Russia and China began quietly investing in North Korea on a large scale: money, industrial equipment, weapons technology, and military training. In exchange, they got access to North Korean ports, mineral resources, and a forward position on the Korean peninsula that let both countries project influence into the region without committing their own troops or making any public commitment to North Korea's defense. Neither government ever officially acknowledged this relationship.

Over that decade, the support went far beyond weapons. North Korea's economy grew. Food shortages that had defined the country for generations ended. The military was rebuilt from the ground up: a modern command and control structure, updated vehicles and aircraft, better-trained and better-fed soldiers, and a defense industry capable of producing modern equipment domestically instead of relying only on imports. By the time this war started, North Korea's conventional military was a genuine peer of South Korea's military in equipment, training, and command structure, while still fielding a much larger population of soldiers than South Korea could matcH

The war began after a change in North Korean leadership. A new supreme leader,Kim Do-hyeon, came to power and built his rule around a single idea: that the original Korean War had never actually ended, only paused by an armistice, and that finishing it was the unfinished duty of his generation. He inherited a military that his predecessors had spent a decade rebuilding into a genuine peer of South Korea's, and where previous leadership had used that strength mainly as leverage in negotiations, Kim Do-hyeon chose to use it.

WAR... WAR NEVER CHANGES.

Seoul was hosting a joint ROK-US military exercise in the weeks before the invasion, which meant additional regular South Korean Army units, beyond the capital's normal garrison, were already present in the city when the attack began.

The first event was a high-altitude device, delivered by missile, that produced an EMP, over Seoul and the surrounding metropolitan region. It disabled radar installations, communications networks, and air defense systems across the capital and its approaches within seconds. South Korean air defenses covering Seoul were effectively blind for an extended period.

With the region's electronic defenses down, North Korea followed the EMP with missile strikes and artillery fire across the city. These strikes hit a wide spread of locations across Seoul rather than following a specific list of military or government targets, aiming to cause as much destruction and confusion as possible in a short amount of time.

North Korean paratroopers dropped into the city only after this bombardment ended. Instead of landing in a small number of concentrated drop zones, they came down in scattered locations across a wide area of Seoul. Spreading the drops this way let North Korea cover more ground at once and reach government buildings and command sites quickly enough to disrupt South Korea's leadership before it could coordinate a response. It also put troops on the ground in enough places that local security forces, including the police, could not concentrate against any single landing.

At the same time, North Korean intelligence operatives who had been living undercover in Seoul for years, some under business or academic cover, received activation orders.

NORTH KOREAN-ALIGNED FORCES

Korean People's Army (KPA)
The regular armed forces of North Korea. All units listed below belong to the KPA.

KPA Strategic Force
Operates North Korea's ballistic missile inventory. Conducted the initial missile strikes on military and civilian targets across Seoul on February 14.

KPA Air Force
Operated transport aircraft that crossed the border at low altitude and dropped paratroopers over Seoul after the bombardment ended.

KPA Electronic Warfare Bureau
Operated radio jamming equipment during the initial bombardment. This equipment blocked military and civilian communications across the Very High Frequency and Ultra High Frequency spectrums.

820th Armored Corps
A corps-level headquarters that commands multiple armored divisions. The 105th Seoul Guards Armored Division belongs to this corps.

105th Seoul Guards Armored Division
The most capable armored division in the KPA. Fields approximately 200 Type-99A main battle tanks, which are North Korea's most advanced tank, plus mechanized infantry in armored personnel carriers. The division is advancing south from Uijeongbu along Route 1 toward the Han River.

KPA XI Corps,commonly called the Storm Corps
North Korea's main special operations command. It is headquartered in Tokchon, South Pyongan Province, and traces its origin to the unit responsible for the 1968 raid on the Blue House, an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate the South Korean president at his official residence. Under the modernization program, XI Corps was rebuilt as a professional, all-volunteer force trained to a standard comparable to the United States Army's 75th Ranger Regiment: extensive selection, airborne and air assault training, and a doctrine built around speed and precision in seizing objectives before an enemy can react. The difference from a unit like the 75th Rangers, which numbers around 3,500 soldiers total, is scale. XI Corps committed multiple airborne brigades to the Seoul operation, spread across dozens of scattered drop points, giving it both the precision of an elite force and the numbers of a much larger conventional one.

Reconnaissance General Bureau (RGB)
 North Korea's foreign intelligence and covert operations agency. Its resident cells in Seoul, already in place before the attack began, were tasked with confirming targets for the missile and artillery strikes and the airborne units, cutting communication lines, and feeding false reports into South Korean command channels to slow down an accurate picture of the situation.

Thunder Airborne Infantry Brigade
An airborne infantry unit within the 11th Storm Corps. Dropped into Seoul to seize government buildings, bridges, and high ground.

Sniper Brigade
A specialized unit within the 11th Storm Corps. Provides sniper and designated marksman teams to support other special operations units.

Light Infantry Brigades
Multiple brigades within the 11th Storm Corps trained for infiltration, sabotage, and raids. Dropped alongside the Thunder Brigade across Seoul to disrupt local defense and police forces.

SOUTH KOREAN-ALIGNED FORCES

Combined Forces Command (CFC)
The joint United States-Republic of Korea military headquarters. Commands all South Korean and US forces defending South Korea. Located at Camp Humphreys and Yongsan Garrison.

US 2nd Infantry Division (ROK-US Combined Division)
The primary US Army ground combat unit in Korea. Headquartered at Camp Humphreys. Combines American and Korean personnel in the same formation. Responsible for defending the central sector of the Demilitarized Zone.

US 7th Air Force
The US Air Force component in Korea. Provides combat air support, reconnaissance, and air defense for ground forces.

US Special Operations Command Korea
Commands US special operations forces in Korea, including Army Special Forces teams and Navy SEALs attached to the peninsula.

Republic of Korea Army
The ground component of the South Korean military.

Capital Defense Command

Amphibious and light infantry forces. Elements are deployed for coastal defense and may be committed to urban operations in Seoul.

Republic of Korea Police
Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency
The municipal police force of Seoul. Responsible for law enforcement, crowd control, and civil defense. Targeted by North Korean decapitation strikes at the start of the invasion.

National Police Agency
The national-level police command coordinating emergency response and civil defense across the country.

The 707th was founded in April 1981, a direct response to a series of North Korean attacks in the preceding decade, starting with the 1968 Blue House raid, which showed South Korea had no dedicated unit capable of responding to this kind of threat faster than its conventional army could mobilize. It was built following the model of the United States' Delta Force and the United Kingdom's SAS, and began training directly alongside Delta Force operators as early as 1984. In 2019 it was upgraded from a battalion-sized unit, commanded by a lieutenant colonel, to a group-sized unit commanded by a colonel. It trains regularly with United States Special Operations Command, the Australian Special Air Service Regiment, and Singapore's Special Tactics and Rescue unit.
The unit operates in small teams rather than as one large formation, typically fourteen-person elements trained in close-quarters assault, precision fire, and demolition.

Winning the overall battle for Seoul is Capital Defense Command's responsibility, along with the conventional army, once reserves are moving and North Korea's main effort at the DMZ is better understood. The 707th's assignment is to find and engage North Korean units before they can consolidate, protect government leadership and command sites from the decapitation attempt, and hold on long enough for Capital Defense Command to bring a much larger conventional response into the city.
