Born to Giovanni “John” Zatara and Sindella, Zatanna inherited powerful magical bloodlines through her father’s mystical ancestry and her mother’s Homo Magi heritage. Raised by John after Sindella’s disappearance, she was trained in stage magic while secretly learning Logomancy, the family’s art of casting spells through backward speech. After a childhood spell nearly went disastrously wrong, John taught her that magic always carries a cost. When the sorceress Allura cursed their family and forced John into exile, Zatanna became a professional stage magician while secretly searching for her missing father and confronting the supernatural forces surrounding her family.

After breaking Allura’s curse and reuniting with John, Zatanna discovered that her mother was still alive and imprisoned by the Hidden Ones. Sindella sacrificed herself protecting her daughter, while John later died saving Zatanna during a ritual against the Great Evil Beast. Inheriting Shadowcrest, her family’s sentient magical mansion, Zatanna embraced her responsibility as a protector of humanity. She eventually joined the Justice League, becoming one of its foremost magical specialists and later a prominent member of Justice League Dark, using her immense sorcery, intelligence, compassion, and theatrical skill to defend the world from supernatural and mystical threats\.

Zatanna is a Homo Magi sorceress whose innate magical heritage gives her extraordinary potential. Through Logomancy, she casts spells primarily by speaking commands backward, allowing her to manipulate reality, matter, and the environment. Her magic includes elemental manipulation, mystical energy projection, force fields, teleportation, dimensional travel, telepathy, illusions, and interaction with spirits and supernatural entities. With enough focus, she can also cast through gestures or sign language.
