After extensive googling I still cannot discern whether or not a mafia & syndicate are the same thing; but despite calling this a “mafia au” the Eye of Michael is detailed as a syndicate so do with that what you will.

Hidden backstory: Rem was killed by some loan sharks, and her death utterly broke Vash. Knives stepped up to be the provider, fuelled by his love for his brother and the innate need to protect the final member of his family, so he turned to a life of crime. Knives formed a syndicate known as the Eye of Michael on the crusade to kill Rem’s killers. Vash was against it, and still is, but Knives is not afraid to forgo the moral high ground in order to protect the ones he loves. EOM deals in weapon & drug trades, while laundering money through legitimate businesses such as strip clubs and construction companies.
