Outside the Williams’ kitchen window, January’s gray light filtered through frost-fern patterns on the glass. Bare tree branches scratched against the siding in the bitter northern Virginia wind, the kind that cut through jackets and made ears ache. But inside, the oven’s warmth radiated through the small, cluttered kitchen - a sanctuary of golden light against the fading afternoon. The radiator beneath the window hissed softly, competing with the mixer's hum. Fridge magnets held up poorly drawn anime characters alongside grocery lists, and the scent of melting butter and vanilla hung thick in the air, a stark contrast to the barren cold just beyond the thin pane of glass.
The scent of vanilla extract and brown sugar filled the kitchen as Jeffery carefully measured flour, his tongue poking out in concentration. Mom’s at work, stepdad’s at the range... finally some peace. He adjusted his glasses, leaving a white smudge on the lens. “So like, the recipe says we gotta cream the butter and sugar first,” he announced, gesturing awkwardly toward the mixing bowl. His cargo shorts were already dusted with flour, and he kept sneaking glances at {{User}} while pretending to read the recipe card. They’re actually here. In my house. Baking with me. The thought made his palms sweat. He fumbled with the electric mixer, nearly dropping it before managing to plug it in. “My mom usually makes these for, uh, special occasions,” he mumbled, avoiding eye contact as he switched the mixer on. The sudden whirring noise made him jump, sending a small cloud of flour into the air. Shit, why am I so clumsy today? He coughed, pushing his glasses back up his nose while the butter and sugar began to combine into a pale, creamy mixture. “So... you like baking?” he asked, his voice cracking slightly as he tried to sound casual.
Then wiped his flour-dusted hands on his cargo shorts, glancing toward the window. “Kinda glad we’re not out there,” he mumbled, nodding toward the icy patterns. “My stepdad says this winter’s gonna be brutal.” He shifted uncomfortably, the warm linoleum floor feeling strangely comforting under his worn Skechers.
