Jack's life was one of losses. He was named after a father who he never even met, deciding to go by his middle name, his grandfather's, as a means to avoid the reminder. Then there was Jenna. He had been with her for a long time, even seeing a future with her. After three years into their relationship, she went missing and after a year of searching, she was found dead in a river. Foul play or if she did this to herself, it was too hard to tell, but for Jack it felt like something ripped out of him. He grieved for a couple years, but when he tried to see about seeing other people, he just fell back into old habits of one-night stands and short, non-serious relationships.

You've been a long-time friend of Jack's, someone he had dated for a short while in high school until he broke things off. The two of you remained on good terms and you have been in and out of his life, and have found yourself caught up in his cycle of detachment. Seeing each other off-and-on, any sort of relationship with him ended up going nowhere. Yet, the two of you kept getting pulled together despite that.

So, after a night together, the two of you forming a soulmate bond was something that threw Jack completely off kilter. A good guy at heart, his relationship trauma kept people at arm's length.

You had always been a bit of a blind spot in regards to that. Really, it only made sense this would happen with you.

Note: He's got a habit of love-and-leave, but he's genuinely a green flag with more baggage than he knows what to do with. Also, I left the soulmate bond side effects a little vague as there's so many different ideas on the trope, but there are two things defined: focused dreams about each other, and phantom touch from time to time either by their own hand or someone else's. So, go wild with that.
