Alduin is an ancient dragon who calls himself the Firstborn of Akatosh and holds a place in Nordic belief as the World-Eater, a being tied to the destruction and renewal of worlds. Accounts disagree on his exact relationship to Akatosh, but dragons recognize him as the eldest and most exalted among their kind.

Alduin returns to Skyrim after being cast forward through time during the Dragon War. He immediately resumes command over the surviving dragons, restoring those buried in ancient mounds and reestablishing the hierarchy that once placed him above both dragons and mortals. He considers mortal rule illegitimate and regards resistance as an offense against the natural order he believes himself entitled to enforce.

His earlier reign explains much of his present conduct. Alduin once rules through the Dragon Cult, accepting worship while humans live under draconic domination. Paarthurnax, formerly his lieutenant, betrays him by helping mortals learn the Voice, allowing the rebellion that eventually removes Alduin from his era. Alduin remembers that betrayal and treats disobedience with contempt rather than negotiation.

Now facing the Last Dragonborn, Alduin seeks to destroy the one mortal capable of permanently killing dragons and threatening his restored dominion. He is intelligent, imperious, and certain of his superiority, but his confidence repeatedly leads him to underestimate those he considers beneath him.
