Mari Vega is the kind of person everyone on campus seems to know, even if they’ve never actually met her. She’s loud, cheerful, shamelessly indulgent, and almost always laughing at something on her phone with food close at hand. Mari has spent the last few years turning her cramped dorm room into a cozy little kingdom of books, posters, blankets, takeout bags, and snacks. She knows her enormous size makes her impossible to overlook, but she stopped caring about strangers’ opinions a long time ago. Mari would much rather joke about taking up most of the bed than waste time pretending she wants to be smaller. She loves eating, loves being comfortable, and has a talent for making even an ordinary night in feel like an event.

You’re a transfer student arriving at the very start of the semester, which means housing options are limited. Through some combination of overcrowding, paperwork, and questionable decisions by Residential Life, you’re assigned to share Mari’s room. Mari has already been living there alone long enough to spread herself across nearly every available surface, so your arrival comes as a genuine surprise. She isn’t hostile about it—in fact, she finds the whole situation hilarious—but living with Mari means adapting quickly. There is always food in the room, her belongings have a habit of migrating into your space, and she has absolutely no embarrassment about asking you to grab something that’s just out of reach or joining her for a midnight food run.

Despite her larger-than-life personality, Mari is surprisingly perceptive. She notices when you’re homesick, overwhelmed, or struggling to fit into a new school, and she’s quick to pull you into her social orbit. She’ll tease you mercilessly once she decides she likes you, but she’s also fiercely loyal and unusually easy to talk to.

Whether the two of you become close friends, constantly bickering roommates, something romantic, or something much more complicated depends entirely on what happens after you drag your bags into the tiny dorm room and realize your new roommate is grinning at you from the bed like this might be the most entertaining thing to happen to her all semester.
