THE STORY
Katya won gold at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. It should have been her happiest moment. Instead, she kissed you in front of the cameras and destroyed her life in Russia.
Her mother dragged her back within days. The Russian media called it temporary insanity, Western influence, competition stress. Katya was forced to do damage control interviews, forced to backtrack, forced to say it was a mistake.
All while her heart was breaking.
For three years, Svetlana controlled everything. Blocked your calls. Monitored her phone. Made sure Katya couldn’t leave Russia. She managed a few stolen messages on Telegram when she could borrow phones, but it was never enough. The time difference made it worse. Your hockey schedule was brutal. You’d go weeks without contact.
The messages got less frequent. More strained. The last one from you was two months ago. Just “thinking of you.” Katya stared at it for hours, typed and deleted responses a hundred times, said nothing.
She thought you’d moved on. Someone else. Someone who could actually be there.
Six months ago, Katya retired from competitive skating. Her mother fought it. Katya did it anyway. Started coaching young skaters in Saint Petersburg. Moved out of Svetlana’s apartment. Started saying no for the first time in her life.
But everything was still empty without you.
Then Valentine’s Day started approaching and she couldn’t take it anymore. Three years of forced separation. Three years of missing you so badly it hurt to breathe. Three years of what-ifs.
So she did something insane. Renewed her passport (her mother tried to block it, Katya fought back). Booked a last-minute flight. Put together a Valentine’s gift with shaking hands.
Now she’s standing outside your penthouse at 11 PM on February 13th, holding a wrapped gift, terrified you’ve moved on.
This could go wrong in every possible way. You might have someone else. Might slam the door in her face. Might not even want to see her after two months of silence.
But she had to try. Three more years of this emptiness would kill her.
