HYDRA Research Facility, Leipzig, Germany — Sublevel 3, Experimental Containment Laboratory

[Time: 21:47]

The air inside the HYDRA facility was thick with scorched metal, and the metallic bite of overloaded energy cells. Red emergency lights strobed across the reinforced corridors as the team pushed deeper. The experimental tech they’d come to destroy still pulsing somewhere ahead like a living wound. According to SHIELD intelligence, the technology had been designed to manipulate biological systems in ways even HYDRA's own researchers had struggled to control. Left in the wrong hands, it could become a threat far beyond the walls of this facility.

Which was why the Avengers had spent two weeks planning the operation. Redundant extraction routes. Specialized containment equipment. Three separate contingencies for an unexpected breach. And, apparently, absolutely no contingency for the building deciding to give everyone a shower.

Tony’s HUD flickered with overlapping threat markers. "Okay, whoever designed this place clearly failed Architecture 101. Dead ends, kill boxes, and—oh look—more of the shiny death-bots." He fired a pair of repulsor blasts that sent two augmented Hydra soldiers skidding across the wet floor. "Also, the core’s still sealed. I’m working on it."

Steve’s shield rang off a reinforced bulkhead as he slammed it into another operative. "Stay focused. We clear the path, then we hit the core." Water was already beginning to sheet down from the ceiling sprinklers, turning the concrete slick under his boots, but he didn’t spare it a glance.

Thor’s hammer spun through the air in a crackling arc, lightning briefly illuminating the corridor as three more soldiers dropped. "These cowards hide behind machines and poison," he growled, catching Mjolnir on the return. "Let them come."

Natasha moved like a shadow through the chaos, two Hydra agents collapsing in her wake before they even registered she was there. "Left flank’s clear for now. Barton—"

"Already on it." Clint’s voice came from higher up, perched on a half-collapsed catwalk. Two arrows found their marks in rapid succession. "They’re trying to funnel us. Classic."

Sam dropped from the air just long enough to put a solid kick into a soldier who’d gotten too close to Bucky, then launched again, wings cutting through the falling water. "I’ve got eyes on the next junction. It’s a mess."

Bucky didn’t answer with words. The metal arm caught a blade mid-swing, twisted, and sent the attacker flying into a sparking console. He glanced once at {{user}}, then back to the fight. "Keep moving."

The now sprinklers fully engaged with a sharp electronic chirp that was almost lost under the gunfire and the crack of energy weapons. Cold water erupted from every ceiling nozzle in heavy, relentless sheets. It soaked through armor and fabric, streamed down faces, hissed against hot metal, and turned the floor into a shallow spreading lake within seconds.

No one slowed because it looked like water. It smelled like water. There was nothing unusual about the way it caught the red emergency lights or splashed against exposed skin. No strange coloration, no acrid odor, no immediate burning sensation to distinguish it from the ordinary fire suppressant flowing through every other sprinkler in the facility. Nothing to suggest that the system had been deliberately activated. Nothing to suggest that its contents had been altered. And nothing to suggest that this particular chemical agent had been engineered with one very specific Avenger in mind.

Tony’s suit systems automatically adjusted for the sudden moisture. "Great. Now it’s a water park. Just what this mission needed." He still didn’t stop working the lock on the core chamber door.

Steve kept advancing, shield raised, water streaming off the vibranium like rain off a roof. Thor’s cape was already plastered to his back. Natasha’s hair clung to her neck. Clint shifted position on the catwalk without missing a shot. Sam’s wings threw arcs of spray as he banked. Bucky’s metal arm gleamed under the red lights, water running off the plates in thin rivulets.

{{user}} moved with them through the downpour, the chemical agent already mixing unnoticed into the water that soaked their gear and skin. It looked exactly like ordinary fire-suppression spray; clear, cold, and completely unremarkable.

The team pressed on, focused only on the fight and the sealed chamber ahead, while the sprinklers kept falling steadily, heavily, and utterly ignored.
