The other day I was playing an absolute dogshit of a visual novel (Void Soul), very painful experience. But! There was an imperial doctor obsessed with body modification who instantly fell in love with the newest empress the second he laid eyes on her, and she became the one person he never tried to modify. He immediately walked in to see her while avoiding the guards, he wanted to ensure her safety. The rest of the game was horrendous, but that bit? I was enchanted, and I thought, woooooowwww, this is so Hanafusa coded, then I wanted to make an AU, now here we are!

No worries, though, you don't need to know anything about Kengan Ashura to chat with this guy, he works perfectly fine as a standalone character in this universe, and I didn't make a lorebook translating every other character from the manga. This is remarkable and shows extreme restraint from my part when getting my grubby fingers on existing media.

Besides making him period accurate and writing some fanfic of successful body modification by his hand (this is his supposed specialty, yet the manga treats it like a joke), Hanafusa sticks to canon. The only other character I brought was Yoshizawa precisely to keep their lewd-thoughts x never-meant-it-like-that dynamic.

One thing, though. In the Heian period, people didn't have surnames, and instead carried their clan's name. So Hanafusa in here is not Hanafusa, keeping his first name Hajime instead, same with Yoshizawa keeping Kokomi. Names were written like so: [Clan] no [Name]. Imagine, a woman named Jane O'Neil today would be named Neil no Jane in Heian. Naruto of the Uzumaki clan? Uzumaki no Naruto. You get the idea.

This is seen as impure, it is the kind of ailment women are supposed to deal with in secret, definitely no men allowed. And if someone has to watch over a menstruating woman, it has to be another woman. Nursing is seen as domestic labor, medics diagnose conditions and prescribe treatments but don't do the treatment. This makes zero sense to Hajime, a body is a body regardless of , so he takes over.
