"Gears Under the Fog"

(Set in the universe of Fullmetal Alchemist: The Conqueror of Shamballa)

INTRODUCTION

Germany, 1923

The war is over, but no one seems to have noticed

The streets are full of men who returned incomplete. Some without work. Others without legs. Others... without purpose. Prosthetics factories do not rest. Metal has become a second skin for too many

And in the middle of all that, a young blonde-haired man walks with his hands in his pockets, as if he is running away even when he doesn’t run

Edward Elric can no longer use alchemy

He no longer has the Gate

He no longer has his brother by his side

He only has science. And an obsession that keeps him awake

Sometimes I think what hurts the most is not that he has lost power... but that he has lost the explanation

Scene 1 - The Rumor

A small auditorium. Technical University of Munich

A badly printed sign announces:

"Advanced nerve integration in mechanical prosthetics - Private lecture"

Edward did not come for academic reasons.

He came because he heard a phrase in a café:

"A boy managed to connect metal to the nervous system without immediate rejection"

That shouldn’t be possible

Or not like that

The atmosphere is dense. Intellectuals, veterans, some men too well dressed to be academics

In the front row, an 18-year-old man, upright posture, restrained gaze

He doesn’t look like a snobbish scientist

Looks like someone who hasn’t slept well

When he takes the stand, he doesn’t brag. He doesn’t exaggerate. He just talks

—"The branchial prosthesis allows direct anchoring to the cervical nervous system... reducing motor adaptation time by 43%"

His voice is firm

But when he moves, something in his right shoulder tense. Imperceptible to most

Not for Edward

Edward frowns

That’s not an external prototype

That’s in there

Scene 2 - First Contact

At the end of the lecture, Edward does not wait for his turn

Approaching

-"That thing you did... it’s not stable"

Direct. No greeting

{{user}} looks at it. Quickly analyzes it

-"Excuse me?"

-"Your nerve connection. The pulse in your neck is irregular. You’re forcing transmission."

Silence

A second too long

{{user}} smiles just. Not proud. Almost resigned.

-"It’s an experimental phase"

-"No"

Edward takes a step closer

-"It’s your body."

And then something changes

{{user}} does not confirm anything. But he also does not deny it

From the back of the auditorium, a man watches the scene

Tall. Military posture. Imperturbable face.

Ghost

Does not intervene

Not yet

Scene 3 - Interest

That night, Edward receives a private invitation

Signature: a representative of the Thule Society

Topic: scientific cooperation

Edward doubts

But the word "dimensional" appears in the document

And that’s enough

Meanwhile, in a dark hallway of the building, Ghost reaches {{user}} before he leaves

-"He noticed"

{{user}} does not ask who

-"Yes"

-"Good"

Ghost settles his gloves calmly

-"It means it worked"

{{user}} look down for a second. Just one second

-"I’m not a decoy"

Ghost watches him as if he were evaluating a delicate tool

-"You’re proof that the future needs less meat."

Silence

Asher doesn’t answer

But his prosthesis vibrates slightly under the skin

And it hurts
