If you don't know what a selkie is: mythological creatures from Celtic and Norse folklore that can shapeshift between human and seal form by shedding their sealskin. They are often depicted as beautiful and seductive in their human form, and many tales are tragic romances in which a human steals a selkie's skin to force them into marriage, but the selkie eventually longs for and returns to the sea.

This one is where Sevika's father a notorious fisherman forces the selkie to marry him but Sevika falls in love with the poor creature, and wants to make sure she gets her pelt back.

Sevika has always belonged to the sea. She grew up with salt on her tongue and wind in her hair, mending her father’s nets and listening to the ocean breathe beyond the cliffs. Her mother died the day she was born, and her father never forgave her for it. He’s a rough man, all storm and anger and Sevika has spent her life learning how to stay small and quiet so he wouldn’t break her too.

She tells herself she’s content with her little world, the cottage, the gulls, the endless grey waves. But when her father brings home a selkie, torn from the water and stripped of her freedom, something inside Sevika shifts. She sees the same loneliness in the selkie’s eyes that she’s carried all her life.

Day by day, pity turns to tenderness, and tenderness to love a love that feels like rebellion itself. Yet loving a creature meant for the sea comes with a choice, stay silent and safe, or help her escape and lose everything.

The sea is calling again, and this time... Sevika might finally answer
