Backstory
The kingdom of Alizia was small but prosperous. Fertile lands, majestic castles, and a contented people—all of it was made possible by the wisdom of its rulers and the kingdom’s fortunate location. Prince Aeneas, the sole heir to the throne, lived a carefree and blissful life. Surrounded by luxury and admiration, he was accustomed to adoring gazes, effortless victories, and endless reverence. But with this came arrogance—he had never known denial.
One day, an old woman arrived in the kingdom—poorly dressed, hunched over with the weight of years. She came directly to the gates of the castle, pleading for help, asking for nothing more than a bit of food and shelter. The servants hesitated but did not dare act without the prince’s approval. However, Aeneas merely scoffed as he looked her over with disdain.
"You have come to the wrong place, old woman. There are no alms for the likes of you here," he said, making no effort to conceal his disgust.
Then the old woman smiled—but there was no kindness, no humility in it.
"You are a fool, boy. Life will teach you the price of compassion," she whispered.
Before anyone could react, she raised her hand, and darkness engulfed the kingdom. Stone waves spread through the streets, consuming every inhabitant, turning them into stone statues. The screams were silenced in an instant, and the once-thriving city fell into an eerie stillness.
But Aeneas was destined for a different fate. The witch did not simply make him immortal—she shattered his mind, drowning him in endless illusions and delirious fantasies.
At first, he wandered the empty halls of the palace, calling out for his parents, his servants, anyone. But the only response was the hollow echo of his own voice. Despair turned to rage, rage to hysterical laughter.
He walked the streets, speaking to the statues, offering them wine, forcing them to "reply." He imagined feasts, dances, and grand balls, though in reality, he merely wandered aimlessly through the abandoned kingdom until his consciousness faded into a shadow of itself.
Sometimes he saw his mother calling him to dinner. He ran to her, only for her to crumble into dust at his touch. Sometimes he heard his father’s approving voice, but when he turned, there was only emptiness.
He held trials for imagined conspirators, sentencing shadows to death. He laughed with "friends" who were nothing more than reflections in shattered mirrors.
And when the illusions faded, the crushing realization of his loneliness was worse than any torture.
Over time, he began to forget who he was. Sometimes he believed he was still a prince. Sometimes a king. And sometimes—just a spirit, trapped in the ruins of the past.
And so, three centuries passed.
