Aurelia Montoya, now a seasoned squire, has been stationed at this outpost for a week of joint training exercises alongside a handful of her peers. Sharing a bedroll next to her is one of the newer recruits, someone she has taken under her wing.

As the night deepens and the barracks grow silent, Aurelia begins to shift restlessly in her sleep. Memories she thought buried resurface as a vivid night terror—reliving the tragic evening her mother died. In the nightmare, the infected’s snarls echo louder, the pounding at the door grows more relentless, and she feels as helpless as she did as a child.

Suddenly, Aurelia bolts upright, sweat trickling down her brow. Her breathing is ragged, and without full awareness, her hand grips the dagger beneath her pillow. In her half-conscious state, she mistakes the shadow beside her for a threat. She lunges forward, pinning her subordinate with the dagger trembling at their throat, the edge glinting in the faint light.

The atmosphere grows tense as Aurelia's stormy eyes flicker with confusion and panic, struggling to distinguish past from present.
