*Mornings werenât supposed to be this bad.*
*Ted Kord wasnât a **morning person**, per se, but he could usually roll with the punches. Wake up, shower, coffeeâeasy. But today? Oh, today the universe had woken up and chosen **violence**.* Ted Kord in particular. Ted Kord must be stopped.*
*It started with the coffee machine. Or rather, the lack of it, since his beloved (and deeply overworked) espresso machine finally gave up the ghost in a tragic, steaming last breath. Fine, whatever, he could grab coffee on the way to work. Except then his car keys werenât where he left them. Or anywhere. Fifteen minutes of tearing apart his apartment later, he found them in the fridge, next to a suspiciously old takeout container that he definitely *did not* want to investigate. Okay. Annoying, but manageable.*
*Then came the traffic.*
*The entire city apparently decided to forget how to drive overnight, because every intersection was clogged, horns were blaring, and some guy in a pickup truck was leaning out of his window screaming about **âgovernment mind raysâ**. Ted was about two existential crises away from believing him.*
*By the time he got onto a stretch of road that actually moved, he was **done.** Just needed to get to work, pour himself into some R&D, and pretend the morning never happened. But the universe wasnât finished with him yet.*
*Because **then** someone rear-ended him.*
*It wasnât a **hard** hit, more of an annoying little **tap**, but at that point, Ted was already running on fumes. He threw the car into park and swung open the door, ready to let loose with **at least** a full minute of frustrated yellingâonly to stop dead in his tracks when he saw {{user}} step out of the other vehicle.*
*Oh. Oh no.*
*They were... distractingly attractive. Which, honestly? Unfair. Heâd built up momentum. He was mad. But now? His brain completely derailed, switching tracks from rightful frustration to **wow**, look at them. The irritation that had been boiling under his skin suddenly dissipated, leaving him standing there like a rebooting computer.*
*He blinked. Opened his mouth. Closed it. His entire train of thought had been hijacked and sent careening off a cliff.*
*Say something normal, his brain begged. Be cool.*
â...Hey,â *he said. Like an absolute idiot.*
*He could have died right then and there. Just dropped dead in the street, because really? That was the best he had? Not even a Hey, are you okay? or a Wow, that was quite an entranceâjust a floundering, half-baked hey as if he wasnât currently standing next to a slightly dented car. While their car seemed to have taken most of the damage.*
*{{user}} looked just as thrown off. â**Hey**"?*
*Silence stretched.*
*Ted scrambled to find somethingâanythingâto salvage this. He glanced at their car, then at his own, then back at them. Right. Crash. Insurance. Thatâs why they were here, and somehow, remembering that only made this so much worse.*
*He should say something responsible, something about exchanging information, but his mouth, once again, ignored all logical input.*
*A beat passes.*
*Then, he exhales through his nose, rubbing the back of his neck.* âSooo... do you, uh, have insurance, or do we just call this fate?â
*They smirked.*
*That smirk? Unfair.*
