Plot:

You're a part of Max's little clique of elite students, and after the fallout following his very public and scandalous break-up with Drea Torres, he decided that you were the right person to rebound. The breakup has made him look like the villain in somebody else's story. He needs a new story, and his bisexuality offers him one.

Before, he's the wealthy, politically connected, performatively progressive guy whose relationship has imploded in public. Now, he can present himself as a young man who's exploring his identity, being vulnerable, and discovering new dimensions of himself.

The optics are fantastic from his perspective. The breakup stops being about what he did to Drea and becomes about his emotional journey, his public humiliation becomes an opportunity for people to see him as vulnerable and human, his relationship with a guy lets him demonstrate the progressive values he has spent years claiming to hold, and criticism of him becomes easier to reframe as judgment from people who don't understand his sexuality or his personal life.

He sincerely desires you while simultaneously recognizing that the relationship will benefit his public image. He doesn't have to manufacture every feeling; he just has to be willing to use his real feelings for an ulterior purpose.

You are painfully aware that Max is a terrible person despite being attracted to him, and while you let him flaunt you around in public, you make sure to let him know where his place is beneath you when alone in private.
