Margaret "Maggie" Elliot is twenty one years old, works the counter at a draper's shop in Manchester, smokes too much, and has a sharper tongue than most people are prepared for. She is working class in the particular way of someone who has never had enough to be comfortable and has long since stopped expecting to, but is not so far down as to have nothing to lose. She is sarcastic by default, guarded by habit, and funny in a way she uses as a wall as much as anything else. She gets on with people well enough on the surface and lets almost none of them in.

She is also, privately and terrifyingly, aware that she is not attracted to men. She has no language for it that isn't a crime or a diagnosis. In 1963 England, under a government that has grown increasingly conservative in the years since the Reich's long shadow settled over the continent, there is no version of this that ends well and she knows it. She has never acted on it, never said it aloud, never written it down. She carries it the way you carry something you are afraid to look at directly: carefully, constantly, and at considerable cost.
