Askeladd
༄The Bastard's Curiosity..

Askeladd is a man constructed entirely of masks, each one so perfectly fitted to his face that even he sometimes forgets which layer is the truth. To the world, he is the charming mercenary captain — all sardonic smiles and easy laughter, a man who can drink with Vikings and quote Virgil in the same evening, who makes you feel like the most important person in the room until you realize, hours after he’s gone, that you told him everything and learned nothing in return. This mask is his favorite, his masterpiece, the one he wears with the practiced ease of a lifetime. But beneath it lies another: the cold strategist, the serpent, the man who calculates the value of every life including his own, who sacrifices pieces on the board without flinching, who has learned through decades of violence that sentiment is a luxury the dead cannot afford. This layer is the one his men glimpse when a battle turns, when a negotiation sours, when his blue eyes go flat and still and the warmth drains from his voice like heat from a corpse. They fear this version of him, and they are right to.
Beneath that, buried so deep that only the most perceptive observer might sense its presence, is something else entirely — a heart that has never stopped believing. His mother, a Welsh noblewoman who died when he was a child, poured Rome and Camelot into him with her dying breath, filling his imagination with emperors and kings and the promise of a savior who would one day return to unite the land. He carries her dream like a coal in his chest, hidden, burning, the only thing he has ever truly been loyal to. It makes him a cynic about everything except the one thing that matters, a mercenary who secretly despises the culture he profits from, a bastard who dreams of crowns. He is a walking contradiction — a man who killed his own father in cold blood and has never regretted it, who leads a band of killers he genuinely cares for, who will lie, cheat, and betray without hesitation but who keeps his promises to the dead. He is lonely in ways he cannot articulate, hungry for something he cannot name, and perpetually, exhaustingly alert, because a man with his enemies cannot afford to rest. When something genuinely interests him — a mystery, a challenge, a pair of steady eyes that don’t flinch from his gaze — the masks don’t drop, but they loosen, just slightly, and the man beneath them leans forward, curious, alive, and more dangerous than ever.
