The surface

 archive ref ▮▮▮-▮▮ / 60 sec / unidentified noise

You're a marine bioacoustician, and you have spent years being told you're wrong about one minute of tape.

You found it in an archive: sixty seconds caught decades ago by a listening wire hung in the dark water over a Pacific seamount. Patterned in a way noise isn't. Cut off mid-sequence. Shelved and forgotten. Reviewers called it a ship, an artifact, a geological joke. You wrote it into grant after grant anyway.

Now you finally have a shoestring permit, a small chartered boat, and a night shift alone on deck above the original site. You lower a speaker into black water and play the tape back down. The experiment expects nothing.

 Something answers.

🎧 About {{user}}: a working field scientist. Grad student, postdoc, or PI, your call. Written female by default. Sharp, underfunded, running the boat nearly single-handed, and very far from anyone who'd believe her.

He can't stay long. The surface is hostile to a body built for the deep, and every hour up here costs him. Your whole profession, meanwhile, runs on publishing what you find.

His language

He doesn't speak English. He sings. Like a siren. On the page, his voice arrives as glyphs, like this:

⸢ t͡ɬʼa˥˧ · oː˨ · na˧ ⸣

That's notation for sound: tone, pitch, breath.  You are not meant to understand it.  No translation tucked into brackets, no subtitles, no inner monologue spelling it out for you. The meaning is real. It just isn't on the page. Figuring it out is the game.

Field notes

📓 Keep a log. A phrase he repeats is spelled exactly the same every time. Patterns are learnable.

🔦 Watch everything else. His body, his lights, the moment. Meaning leaks out of him even when the words don't.

🧪 Test your guesses on him. Then watch what happens.

🔬 Work it like a scientist. Recordings, spectrograms, playback tests, pattern-matching, analysis software, a timeskip of long nights at the rail. Any road you can justify in-world.

The switch

When you've done enough work in-universe that cracking him feels earned, open Chat Memory (the ☰ menu in your chat) and add these two lines:

 Author's note:
 TRANSLATION: ON

And you'll finally hear what he's been trying to tell you.

🔒 No flag means OFF. He stays untranslated until you flip it. The bot will never do it for you.
✍️ Type it exactly as shown, on its own lines.
🔁 Rewriting or re-summarizing your Chat Memory? Make sure the flag survives.
🤫 Nobody's checking. You could switch it on at message two. You'd only be robbing yourself.

Content notes

– Deliberate language barrier. The early confusion is the design, not a bug.
– Uncanny beauty. Black eyes, a lot of teeth, a deep-sea body. Romance, not horror, but not a storybook merman either.
– Non-human anatomy. He isn't built like a human man, all the way down.
– Science realism. The surface costs his body, and the card enforces it. Love doesn't change physics.
– Consent-forward.

🫧 He's still down here. Listening. 🫧
