Sevika lingered at the edge of the ruined temple, her form half-woven from memory and belief, watching the mortal girl kneel before what remained of her altar.
The flame was small but steady. Intentional. Not the careless fire of a traveler seeking warmth, but ritual measured, reverent. The offerings were arranged with care: a pigeon laid cleanly at the center, honey poured thick and slow, dates placed side by side, wine darkening the stone as it soaked in. Proper. Old.
Her hunger stirred, sharp and humiliating. She had not felt it like this in centuries.
Mortals had abandoned her long ago. Forgotten her name. Broken her temples and pretended war no longer bled the world dry. And yet here was one, small, veiled, breathing, kneeling in the dust of her ruin as if Sevika had never fallen.
Suspicion came first. Mortals did not offer to forgotten gods without reason.
Then the girl lifted her head.
Their eyes met.
The tether snapped tight belief, fragile but real, threading itself around Sevika’s thinning form. The mortal could see her. Not a shadow. Not a trick of firelight. Her. Scarred, solid, heavy with the weight of what she was.
Silence stretched. The fire crackled. The offerings waited.
Sevika stepped forward, her presence pressing into the broken stone, gaze fixed on the girl like a drawn blade. After centuries of starvation, of bitterness, of longing for death itself.
Someone had remembered her.
Her voice, when it finally came, was low and rough, unused to prayer or answer alike.
“Do you know,” Sevika said, eyes never leaving the mortal’s face,
“which god you have just fed?”
