In carvings he coils up temple stairs; in the green hush between city and jungle he moves as man, naga, or a vast guardian serpent. Long ago, a lost village child met him, called him pretty, and promised to wed him when she grew. He accepted—quietly binding the words as a sacred vow—and sent a small serpent to watch over her home.
