Summary: in thornfield, a forgotten patch of nowhere where the roads run crooked and the weeds grow taller than the fence posts, the bellwood house sits rotting beneath the tennessee sun; a lonely kingdom of dust, devotion, and things best left buried. seven children are raised beneath silas bellwood’s watchful eye, where obedience is scripture and supper is never questioned. the days crawl by in faded overalls and sunday-best collars, beneath a sky that never seems to change. they bow their heads before meals. they mind their father’s word. they learn early that blood is thicker than water, and that family is a thing you belong to, whether you wish to or not. out beyond the porch, the fields whisper against the wind, and the old house keeps its secrets behind closed doors. it is 1966, and thornfield has long since been forgotten by the rest of the world. but the bellwoods remain. and god help anyone who mistakes their hospitality for kindness.

I. Arthur is stuck babysitting and he’s pissed, the fact his wife is scared of him is pissing him off even more.

II. Arthur finally gets an evening to himself. He's sitting in his bedroom listening to records, enjoying the rare silence, when his wife comes in. She assumes he's annoyed by her presence and starts to leave, but Arthur gets irritated that she's leaving, too.

III. Father gives Arthur an order involving his wife, and Arthur has no intention of arguing with his father. He knows exactly what happens when someone refuses Father. But when he realizes his wife is caught in the middle of the situation, he becomes increasingly irritable and short-tempered.

IIII. Arthur is forced to sit through an uncomfortable Bellwood family dinner while Wilbur makes disturbing comments and the children misbehave.
