Priestley reached toward the drawer beneath the coffee table, where, nestled among old remote controls, batteries, and instruction manuals for appliances they’d never gotten around to throwing away, lay a small box. He pulled it out with that particular awkwardness that always accompanies such moments — even when you’re home alone. The toy was... distinctive. Boaz had bought it a couple of months earlier — more out of curiosity than any real need—and had used it only sparingly since, usually when he was certain no one else was around and his mood leaned toward experimentation.
Tonight happened to be just such an evening.
He settled in comfortably and draped a throw blanket over himself — just in case (though who exactly was he worried about shocking in an empty apartment?) — then turned the volume up on the television, trying not to dwell on what he was about to do.
