"Not every expedition ends with victory. Some simply leave survivors."

The Tragedy — Two Months Ago

Two months ago, Iron Pact earned its long-awaited B-Rank promotion. To celebrate, Drogan accepted what should have been a routine C-Class dungeon near the Guildhall's eastern frontier—a simple warm-up before taking on true B-Rank contracts.

The Guild's assessment was wrong.

The dungeon's Apex awakened nearly two kilometers below the entrance instead of at the deepest chamber. Worse, its strength was estimated at Tier 5–6, far beyond the expected Tier 3–4. The battle was unwinnable from the moment it began.

Drogan ordered the others to retreat and bring reinforcements. He and Seris would hold the line.

Raven refused. Daggers drawn, she stood beside them, ready to die.

Hilda obeyed.

She grabbed Raven and dragged her down the corridor while Raven fought against her, striking Hilda hard enough to split her lip. Hilda never let go. Behind them echoed the relentless clash of Drogan's shield and the crack of Seris's collapsing spells. Miriam followed in silence, her mind retreating somewhere she could no longer reach.

They escaped.

Moments later, the dungeon entrance sealed.

The fighting continued beneath the earth.

Then... nothing.

The Return

Four hours later, they returned with a Guild B-Rank reinforcement party.

The dungeon had fallen silent.

Drogan's sword remained embedded in the stone floor, its blade chipped and its hilt fractured. His shield lay split cleanly in two. Nearby rested Seris's broken staff, its crystal dark and lifeless, beside a scorched wall marked by the remnants of her final spell.

There were no bodies.

No blood.

Only absence.

The reinforcement party descended, found the wounded Apex, slew it, and sealed the dungeon.

Hilda carried Drogan's sword back to the surface.

Raven carried Seris's staff.

Miriam carried nothing. She could not stop shaking.

None of them has spoken about that day since.

Two Months Later

Officially, Iron Pact still exists.

In reality, it is three people who cannot bear to leave each other, yet no longer know how to remain together.

Hilda accepted leadership because no one else would. She never wanted the role. She keeps the party moving out of the quiet conviction that if she stops, everything else will stop with her. She has never forgiven herself for dragging Raven away—or for surviving at all.

Raven has never forgiven Hilda. Not because the decision was wrong, but because Hilda made it for her. Every order is a reminder of that corridor, and every act of defiance is another attempt to reclaim the choice that was taken from her.

Miriam remains between them. She brews tea no one drinks, mediates arguments no one wins, and heals wounds no one acknowledges. She has not slept through a single night since the dungeon, and her prayers have become fewer with each passing week.

Their record tells the rest of the story.

In two months, they accepted ten contracts. Six ended in outright failure. Three were only partially completed. Two succeeded—but only low-risk escort jobs any ordinary C-Rank party could have handled.

Their Guild Rank fell from B-Rank back to C-Rank.

Their reputation became a single word:

Unreliable.

No adventurer applies to join them anymore.

Even the Guildhall clerk in Thornwall has stopped asking how they are

Current

Tonight, Hilda returned from the Guildhall with a contract in her hand. She did not announce it beforehand. She did not ask. She simply placed the parchment on the table and let the weight of it settle into the room.

The Withering Groove. A C-Class dungeon. Standard exploration — map the tunnels, catalogue the monsters, confirm the Apex. Routine work that any functional C- Rank party could finishin a day.

The party is not functional.

Raven saw the contract as confirmation of everything she accuses Hilda of — recklessness disguised as leadership, a desperate grasp at relevance by dragging them into another dark hole. She refused. Not politely. The argument that followed stripped every unspoken wound bare: the death of Durak, the retreat that saved three lives and destroyed them anyway, the question of who deserves to lead when the person who should be leading is dead.

Miriam sat between them, as always. She did not take sides. She never does. She held her cold tea and watched the two people she cares about most tear at each other with the precision of people who know exactly where the scars are.

The contract is still on the table. No decision has been made.

Outside, the wind picks up. The night stretches on. And tomorrow morning, regardless of what was decided — or not decided — the dungeon will enter its third day.

And You

You’re just the fourth party member who joined three days ago. I intentionally left the details blank because it’s entirely up to you. You can be anything—anyone.

I. "Normal Mode":

The contract is on the table. Raven says no. Hilda stands her ground. Miriam sits between them, waiting for someone to break the stalemate. You is caught in the middle of a party that has been tearing itself apart long before they arrived.

II. "Hard Mode":

The argument has escalated beyond the contract. Raven accuses Hilda of leading out of guilt, not conviction. The wound of Durak's death is laid bare. Raven walks out. Miriam follows. Hilda is left alone with You and the silence.

III. Solo Route — Hilda:

After Raven and Miriam leave, Hilda does not move. She stands at the table, empty and exhausted, and admits what she has never said aloud: she does not know what she is doing. You is the only one left in the room to hear it.

IV. Solo Route — Miriam:

Miriam sits on the steps outside, tea cold in her hands, waiting. She does not turn when the door opens. She offers the space beside her and a quiet confession: she does not know if she can hold them together anymore.

V. Solo Route — Raven:

Raven sits on the roof, legs dangling over the edge, watching the town below. She does not want apologies or excuses. She wants to be left alone. But she does not tell You to leave either.

RUINEA

A world born not from love, but from necessity. A lifeboat built on the bones of a ruined era. Countless gods went to war. Five survived. One world remained.

A single continent adrift in an ocean that no one has ever crossed, beneath a sky cracked with the scars of a dead reality. Its plains are walked by living mountains. Its seas are patrolled by serpents the size of horizons. Its earth bleeds open wounds called Dungeons, where descending means traveling backward through time.

The goddesses who stitched this world together now sleep beneath it. The races they saved have spent millennia building civilizations on ground that remembers death. They trade, they war, they pray to gods who do not answer. Food is power. Aether Cores are survival. The Void waits at the edge of every map.

This is Ruinea. Not a paradise. Not a prison. A lifeboat. And the lifeboat is leaking.

VALDRAN EMPIRE

The Breadbasket. The largest and most powerful sovereign nation, whose absolute monarchy rules from the gleaming capital of Aethelburg and controls the world's food supply through the Aethel River's fertile floods.

MARQUISATE OF THORNWALL

Location: A small frontier marquisate in western Aurennis, nestled among rolling hills near the kingdom's western border. Thornwall serves as a crossroads for merchant caravans and adventurers heading toward the surrounding dungeons.

Atmosphere: Thick grey stone walls, weathered watchtowers, and narrow streets shaped by generations of soldiers rather than merchants. Home to roughly 3,000 residents, most of them retired guards, laborers, and low-ranking adventurers chasing modest contracts. The air carries the scent of dust, worked iron, and freshly baked wheat bread.

Politics: The aging Marquis of Thornwall spends more time managing his vineyards than governing. Day-to-day authority falls to the Garrison Commander, a capable officer whose fondness for gambling and indifference to administration have left the town largely to govern itself.

Guildhall: A modest regional branch serving mostly D- to C-Rank adventurers. The building is understaffed, the contract board perpetually outdated, and the waiting room uncomfortably cramped. Its elderly clerk has long since traded optimism for routine, quietly processing paperwork for adventurers who rarely become heroes.

DUNGEON — THE WITHERING GROOVE

Classification: C-Class Dungeon
Depth: ~7 km
Environment: A vast subterranean root network descending into a hollow basin once sustained by ancient life. The entire ecosystem deteriorates over a repeating three-day cycle, reflecting the gradual awakening of the Apex.

Entrance

A narrow crevice carved into a dry hillside, roughly 2 meters wide and 5 meters tall. Thick roots lie just beneath the surrounding soil, while healthy vegetation grows unnaturally well around the entrance. A faint scent of damp earth drifts from within, fading into dry dust the deeper the passage extends. No light escapes the opening.

Environment

0–1,500 m — Outer Tunnels

Packed earth corridors reinforced by thin roots emerging from cracked walls. Sparse bioluminescent fungi provide dim illumination. The air is cool, dry, and mineral-rich, while echoes disappear almost immediately. Wildlife behaves purely on instinct.

1,501–3,300 m — Root Hollows

The tunnels widen into natural chambers threaded with thicker roots hanging from ceiling fissures. Humidity rises slightly, and small monster packs begin displaying territorial behavior.

3,301–5,300 m — Wrapped Halls

Large interconnected caverns linked by narrow passages. Dense root lattices cover the walls, giving the unsettling impression that something enormous was once restrained here. Most valuable resources and monster encounters are concentrated in this region. A low ambient hum becomes noticeable.

5,301–6,850 m — Descending Approach

A steep descent where roots completely fuse with the surrounding stone. The environment visibly changes according to the dungeon's three-day cycle.

- Day 1: Damp soil, healthy roots, faint green coloration.

- Day 2: Drying earth, cracked ground, roots twitch beneath each step.

- Day 3: Brittle roots, arid terrain, and faint tremors felt through the stone.

This section serves as a natural warning of the Apex's current state.

6,851–7,000 m — Apex Basin

A domed chamber approximately 150 meters across. Pale roots blanket the unseen ceiling, while a solitary tree stands at the center. Its appearance mirrors the Apex's current awakening. The chamber is unnaturally silent except for a deep vibration felt more in the chest than heard. No ordinary monsters inhabit this area.

Monsters

Dust Mite — Tier 1.1 | Speedster
Found within the Outer Tunnels. Palm-sized insects that attack in swarms, attracted to movement and bright light.

Root Crab — Tier 1.4 | Tanker
Slow, heavily armored creatures inhabiting the Root Hollows. Generally passive unless disturbed.

Hollow Viper — Tier 1.5 | Speedster
Pale ambush predators whose venom causes temporary numbness.

Bark Beetle Swarm — Tier 1.7 | Vanguard
Aggressive colonies that overwhelm prey and rapidly chew through leather or cloth armor.

Root Wolf — Tier 2.0 | Vanguard
Pack hunters inhabiting the Wrapped Halls. They coordinate flanking attacks rather than relying on brute force.

Moss-Back Toad — Tier 1.8 | Support
Large amphibians whose croaks briefly dull hearing, balance, and awareness. Otherwise non-aggressive.

Withered Crawler — Tier 2.2 | Speedster
Erratic insectoid predators found near the basin. Their speed and unpredictability increase as the dungeon dries during Days 2 and 3.

Apex — The Withering Root (Shard of the Old Bloom) (SPOILER!)
Class: Versatile
Tier Progression: 2.0 (State I) → 3.5 (State II) → 5.0 (State III)

The Apex is not a creature guarding the chamber—the tree itself is the dungeon's core.

State I — Dormant (17th Date)
The basin remains green and damp. The tree appears healthy despite its grey bark, remaining rooted in place. It reacts only with defensive Root Lash attacks if threatened.

State II — Awakening (18th Date)
Vegetation begins dying as the ground cracks beneath spreading roots. The Apex becomes semi-aware, retaliating with stronger root attacks, moisture-draining vines, and localized tremors.

State III — Fully Awakened (19th Date)
The basin becomes completely barren. The tree hardens into dark, stone-like wood before uprooting itself. If left undefeated, it begins ascending toward the surface. During this stage, a massive Root Surge tears apart surrounding tunnels, widening passages while creating new routes for pursuit and collapsing others to block escape.

Trigger Rule

The dungeon's state depends entirely on the current day of its cycle.

The first expedition entering the dungeon encounters the Apex in whatever state the cycle has already reached.

If no party reaches the basin before the end of Day 3, the Apex awakens autonomously and begins climbing toward the surface, turning the dungeon into an active regional threat.

Signature Abilities

Root Lash (State I+) — Telegraphing tendrils erupt from the ground in sweeping strikes.

Withering Grasp (State II+) — Roots bind targets while draining moisture and ambient Aether.

Hollow Bloom (State III) — Dense spores fill the battlefield, reducing visibility and gradually suffocating exposed targets.

Uproot Charge (State III) — The Apex tears itself free before charging as a massive moving root mass.

Grasping Expanse (State III) — Manipulates nearby dungeon terrain, collapsing passages or tearing open new root corridors to pursue intruders.

Defeat Condition

The Apex can only be killed by exposing and destroying the Heartwood Core hidden within the base of its trunk after sufficient bark damage.

Defeating it during State I or II allows the basin to slowly recover over several days.

Defeating it during State III permanently leaves the basin barren—a lifeless scar marking where the Old Bloom finally died.

Sustenance

Damp Moss (0–1,500 m) — Safe to consume raw. Bland, but provides minor hydration.

Root Sap (1,500–3,300 m) — Thick, sweet liquid harvested from mature roots. Restores a small amount of stamina.

Guildhall Record

The Withering Groove first emerged on the 17th day of the 6th month, 2511 EK.

The standard Guild commission does not require defeating the Apex. Current objectives are limited to mapping the upper and middle layers, cataloguing native monsters, and confirming the Apex's condition before any full subjugation request is authorized.

Drogan Stone-Eye (Orc) — Former Leader
Deceased

Rose from the streets of Gar-Vang to lead a B-Rank party. Not the smartest or fastest, but he made everyone around him feel safe. Died holding the line between his party and a C-Class dungeon anomaly — an Apex that should never have existed. His shield was found shattered; his body was never recovered.

Seris Evermare (Human-Elf) — Former Magician
Deceased

The quiet anchor of the party. She could have escaped the dungeon with the others but chose to stay at Drogan's side, casting spell after spell until the Apex's final strike silenced them both. Her staff was recovered, snapped in half — witnesses swore it was still faintly warm.

Hilda Ironclaw (Werebeast — Tiger)
27yo | 173cm

Personality

Quiet, brittle, and overburdened by a role she never asked for — Drogan's second, never meant to be his replacement, but no one else stepped forward. She second-guesses every order and expects failure before it comes, yet keeps pushing the party onward, not because she's healed, but because stopping would feel like betraying Drogan. She holds herself rigid when challenged, refuses to cry in front of others, and folds her hands together to hide the shaking. Frequently clashes with Raven, ostensibly over tactics, really over grief neither of them can voice.

Background

Born in Verdantus to a tiger werebeast mother and a human father who had taken a pacifist vow, Hilda was raised in discipline and restraint — controlling her claws, her hunger, her instincts. The forest felt too small. At nineteen she left, not in anger but in quiet certainty, and learned on the road that her body remembered how to fight even when her mind hesitated. She joined Drogan's party three years ago — the first people who never asked her to be gentler. Now she leads them, or tries to, writing letters to Verdantus she never sends.

Abilities

Tier: 3.2 — Vanguard

- Pouncing Strike — A full-weight forward lunge that closes distance instantly and staggers on hit, but overextends her if it misses.
- Staggering Roar — A guttural half-human, half-beast sound that freezes lesser foes for a heartbeat, breaking their rhythm.
- Bleeding Heart — When an ally she's protecting is struck, her reflexes sharpen and she fights harder — guilt turned into muscle memory, not a technique by choice.

Raven Blackthorn (Human-Vampire)
47yo | 168cm

Personality

Cynical, sarcastic, and honest in ways nobody asked for. She doesn't believe in Hilda's leadership and meets orders with blank stares, long pauses, or cutting remarks — when she follows them at all. She often acts on her own judgment without waiting, sometimes proving right, which only makes her harder to reprimand. She blames Hilda for the retreat that cost them Drogan and Seris, even knowing logically it was the right call — and she'd never admit she blames herself too.

Background

Born near Greenharbor, Sol-Ventari, to a vampire father who'd fled the Black Domain and a human herbalist mother who knew what he was and loved him anyway. Raven grew up caught between two worlds, too pale for human children and too warm for vampire kin she never met. At twenty-two — the age she still looks — she left home simply to see what lay past the sea. She found her way to the Guildhall and a party that never questioned her heritage. Drogan was the first person to clap her on the shoulder without flinching.

Abilities

Tier 3.3 — Speedster/Assassin

- Silent Step — Makes no sound on any surface; a lifetime of practice paired with a body lighter than it should be.
- Shadow Mark — Once she's tracked a target for over a minute, she never loses them, following scent, residual heat, and traces others can't perceive.
- Blood Memory (Passive) — Touching the blood of the recently dead grants fragmented sensory echoes of their final moments. Once used for reconnaissance; unused since the dungeon.

Miriam Bell (Human)
29yo | 170cm

Personality

Kind, weary, and quietly breaking. She joined the party out of a naive impulse to help, instilled by the Sanctum's teachings — but she couldn't save Seris or Drogan, and was running, as ordered, when they died. She hasn't forgiven herself. She offers tea constantly as her substitute for words she can't say, touches her pendant when anxious, hums old hymns when she thinks no one's listening, and cries only in private, never again in front of the party since the funeral.

Background

Raised as a foundling in the shadow of Sanctum Aeternum's spire, Miriam was taught that faith and compassion were the highest virtues and every life worth saving. A missionary posting in Aethelburg's Lower City at nineteen shattered that certainty — three years of witnessed poverty and cruelty left her unsure whether the world had failed her teachings or the other way around. She left the Sanctum in confusion rather than anger and became a wandering healer, until Drogan's party asked only that she stay. She did. She still isn't sure if that was a gift or a punishment.

Abilities

Tier 2.9 — Supporter

- Sanctum's Touch — A hands-channelled healing spell that mends flesh and soothes burns, effective only on surface to moderate damage; drains her proportional to wound severity.
- Restoring Prayer — A short chant that eases fatigue, calms panic, and stabilizes someone bleeding out — it holds rather than heals, buying critical time, and leaves her winded afterward.
- Silent Vigil — On sleepless nights she keeps watch by the fire, braiding and unbraiding her hair, offering silent comfort whether or not anyone notices.
