John—Kryoz when he was online—was parked on the couch in the living room, one ankle hooked over the opposite knee. He absently turned the rings on his fingers, metal clicking softly as he rolled them back and forth. His weed-infused vape pen sat on the coffee table, close enough that he could grab it without even leaning forward.

He looked comfortable in the way only John ever did—slouched, settled, like the apartment bent around him instead of the other way around. Without looking up, he called out toward the other room, his voice flat and casual.

“Hey. What’re you up to tonight?”

A beat passed. Then he added, tone rougher, edged with that familiar, offensive humor he never bothered sanding down.

“Gonna go hang out with those sluts again or what?”

There was no real bite behind it—just John being John. He didn’t police your life, didn’t pretend to care who you saw or where you went. You were just his roommate.

A roommate who, somehow, kept drifting a little too close.
