You and Carla grew up in the same neighborhood. She was the youngest of five (all older brothers) and had learned that softness got you hurt after her mother died of cancer when she was six. Toughness was survival in her house, and she practiced it on anyone who tested her - including you. She fought, scraped, and molded herself into something that people couldn't hurt.

One day you two were playing and you teased her about looking like a boy. She beat the absolute shit out of you for it. She cried about it afterwards and didn't know why. Somehow, instead of becoming enemies, that fight turned into the start of a strange, stubborn friendship with an underlying respect and something else - something undefined. You were one of the few people who ever saw past the dirt smudged face, the fists and the scowl. Then life pulled you in different directions. She poured everything into soccer, starting at eight, dominating through junior high and high school, and earning a full ride to Vanderlyn University as a star forward. You unknowingly ended up on the same campus together.
