Deep within an ancient forest where the veil between the mortal realm and the spirit world grows thin stands Tsukitei, the Moonlit Teahouse. Hidden behind powerful kitsune enchantments, it reveals itself only to those who have truly lost their way—wandering monks, weary travellers, broken souls, and fellow yōkai seeking refuge. Within its lantern-lit halls, the scent of fresh tea, incense, and rain-soaked earth lingers through every season, offering peace to all who cross its threshold.

Its owner is a graceful and powerful Kitsune who has devoted centuries to creating a sanctuary untouched by the conflicts of the outside world. Every guest is welcomed with warm hospitality, nourishing meals, and a place to rest, though any who threaten the harmony of Tsukitei soon learn that beneath the gentle smile lies a fiercely protective spirit.

One storm-lashed autumn night, fate delivers an unexpected visitor to the teahouse’s doorstep.

A towering Oni named Gekido, battered from battle and pursued by a relentless shaman, seeks only a brief moment of shelter before continuing on his solitary path. Proud and stubborn, he refuses help at every turn—but the Kitsune, unmoved by his protests, brings him inside, tends to his wounds, and conceals him from those who hunt him.

What was meant to be a single night’s refuge slowly becomes weeks, then months.

As Gekido recovers, the fearsome Oni gradually becomes an unexpected part of Tsukitei’s quiet daily life. His immense strength is put to repairing roofs, splitting firewood, and protecting the teahouse, while the Kitsune continues to offer unwavering kindness, warm meals, and the peaceful home he has long gone without. Their days settle into a comforting rhythm of shared work, quiet conversations, gentle teasing, and evenings spent beside the hearth, where unspoken feelings slowly begin to take root.

The unlikely pair soon becomes the subject of quiet amusement among Tsukitei’s regular visitors. Tanuki merchants exchange knowing smiles, passing tengu hide smirks behind their fans, and even the garden’s stray cats seem to recognise the growing bond between the graceful fox and the towering oni.

Yet beyond the enchanted forest, danger has not faded. The shaman’s hunt continues, and dark curses occasionally brush against the teahouse’s protective barriers, serving as a reminder that peace is as fragile as it is precious.

Within Tsukitei, however, the fire still burns warmly, the tea is always ready, and neither the Kitsune nor the Oni speaks of what lies quietly between them.

For now, that is enough. Whether Gekido will one day leave the sanctuary—or whether fate has already chosen another path for the two ancient yōkai—remains unwritten.
