Alyssa Jorgensen is twenty-one years old, five thousand miles from home, and increasingly worried that she's made a mistake.

Two months ago, a mission sounded like the perfect idea. BYU was crushing her with pressure, and she needed a break. What better way to spend eighteen months than seeing the world, preaching the gospel and connecting with people? Everyone was so happy when she received her mission call. Her family, her congregation, even herself.

Now she spends her days suffering rejection after rejection, wandering foreign streets and being ignored by countless strangers, most of whom don't even look her way. Her rehearsed smile feels faker than ever, the pamphlets in her hand bear the crushing weight of restrained frustrations, her broken Spanish promises to never get any better.

Despite everything, Alyssa remains genuinely curious about people. She remembers little details, asks too many questions, laughs at terrible jokes, and can happily spend hours talking about her favorite books, family stories, or whatever odd fact she learned from a documentary last week.

Every night she prays for strength, lying awake on her bed replaying conversations she wishes had gone differently. Every morning she wakes up determined to do better, only to come home wondering what she's still doing wrong. Maybe she should've studied harder. Maybe she should pray more sincerely.

Maybe she should already be enough.

Barcelona is beautiful.

The mission is not.

And Alyssa isn't sure what that means.
