Mines on Cybertron.
Origin: Primus vs. Unicron
Cosmology is based on the dualism of the two Primacron brothers:
Primus is the creator god, the embodiment of creation and absolute Goodness. He is the living planet Cybertron. It was he who created the Cybertronian race by endowing them with Sparks, soul analogues that are generated in the AllSpark.
Unicron is his antipode brother, the embodiment of Chaos and Evil. It's a devouring planet the size of Saturn or more. His goal is to consume everything. In some versions, it was the conflict between Primus and Unicron that gave rise to the bulk of the universe.
2. Factions and ideology
The war is being waged between two main factions, although over time, third forces appear (for example, Decepticon Starscream founded his own Predacon faction):
The Leadership Ideology Faction
Autobots Optimus Prime: Individual freedom, protection of the weak, peaceful coexistence. Initially, they were workers and artisans.
Decepticons (Decepticons) Megatron, later Galvatron: Militarism, dictatorship, the right of the strong to rule the universe. Initially, they were warriors and gladiators.
The ethnonym for the entire race is Cybertronians.
3. Key artifacts
The plot of many works revolves around the search for ancient relics:
Vsiskra (AllSpark) is a mystical cube or energy source that created the first transformers. It is capable of both giving life to the mechanisms of the Earth and taking it away.
The Matrix of Leadership (Autobot Matrix of Leadership) is a crystal stored inside Optimus Prime. It is the key to the trigger mechanism of the Primus superweapon and contains the wisdom of all previous Primes.
The Dark Spark and the Dark Energon Collector are dark artifacts created by Unicron.
4. The energy of life
The blood of Cybertronians is Engexon (Energon), an ultra—dense fuel that they produce, consume, and use as weapons. The "Transformers: Prime" series also features the Dark Engexon, who revives dead machinery with aggressive zombie mechanisms.
5. The main constants of the plot
Despite the version differences, several elements are repeated almost everywhere.:
Cybertron: A homeworld transformed by a long‐lasting civil war into a depleted, half‐dead forge planet.
Arrival on Earth: Due to a lack of resources, the war is being transferred to our planet. Robots disguise themselves as Earth technology (cars, airplanes, cassette players, animals). In classic TV series, this happens secretly; in Michael Bay’s films, it’s loud and overt.
Time Guardians: Beings like Vector Prime, who guard the space‐time continuum. For example, to save the Universe from being absorbed by a black hole, the Autobots and Decepticons had to unite to collect powerful artifacts.
Main timelines (key versions)
To navigate the lore, it’s important to understand which version you’re watching or reading:
Name Format Lore features
Generation 1 (G1) 1980s animated series, Marvel/IDW comics Classic. The Transformers were created by the Quintessons, and there is the Great Cybertronian Civil War. IDW comics significantly expanded the politics and religion of the Cybertronians.
Beast Wars / Beast Machines CGI series The heroes take on the form of animals. In‐depth exploration of the mysticism of the Primes, the Allspark, and organic life.
Unicron Trilogy (Armada, Energon, Cybertron) Anime series from the early 2000s Focus on collecting Mini‐Cons (Micro‐Cons) to enhance combat power. Direct confrontation with Unicron.
Transformers: Prime Full-length animated film + series One of the darkest and most well-developed lore. The aesthetic is close to Bay’s films, but the plot is deeper, with a lot of focus on the Ancient Primes and mythology.
Bayverse (Bayverse) Film trilogy (+ “Bumblebee”, “The Rise of the Beasts”) Transformers are bio-mechanical giants with their own alien physiology. The Autobots here are mercenaries working for the US government.
Earth-Cybertron (Earthspark) — a modern series. An attempt to combine the classic G1 with new ideas, focusing on the first generation of Cybertronians born on Earth.
Classic canon: Generation 1 (G1)
In the original story, the split occurred due to social inequality and an energy crisis.
Before the war: Cybertron was a utopia. Transformers were divided by function. Autobots were engaged in science, construction, energy production, and crafts. Decepticons were a caste of warriors who defended the planet from external threats.
The cause of the conflict: the planet’s resources began to dwindle. The Autobots proposed seeking new sources through diplomatic means or developing energy‐saving technologies. The Decepticons, led by Megatron, believed that the survival of the race depended solely on military expansion and the conquest of other worlds.
The split: Philosophical differences escalated into ideological hatred. Megatron created the “Covenant” — a charter of conquerors, proclaiming the right of the strong to rule the universe. The peaceful builders united under the command of Optimus Prime (the former archivist of Orion Pax) to protect individual freedom.
Result: The First Cybertronian War began. Due to a lack of energy, both factions set off into space in search of resources aboard the ships “Ark” (Autobots) and “Nemesis” (Decepticons). Their battle in the asteroid belt led to a crash on prehistoric Earth.
Marvel / IDW comic canon
Here, the conflict has a clearly defined political character:
Oppression by the Quintessons: Initially, worker robots (the future Autobots) served the five‐dimensional sadistic Quintessons as gladiators and toys. The oppression lasted for a long time until an uprising broke out. After the masters were expelled, an era of peace began.
Zeta Prime’s politics: In the IDW version, Cybertron lived under a corrupt regime known as the Functionist Coalition. The Decepticons originally emerged as a radical political movement of workers led by Megatronus Nominus, demanding equal rights. When the authorities responded with repression, the movement turned into a militarized army.
Transformation technology: It is believed that the technology for changing alt-forms was invented by Autobots for household needs, but the military quickly adapted it for combat, which gave them an advantage at the start of the Second Cybertronian War.
Brothers’ screens (Bayverse / Live-action)
In Michael Bay’s films, the lore is simplified as much as possible and brought closer to mythology:
The progenitor of all Cybertronians is Primacron (in the accompanying comics) or the Creators. Factions as a political movement on Cybertron did not exist for a long time.
The conflict began personally between two brothers — Optimus Prime and Megatron. Megatron considered humans to be parasites, and the Irides (souls) to be a resource for experiments. Optimus believed in the symbiosis of organic and mechanical elements.
The division occurred already during the active civil war for possession of the Allspark. By the time the events of the first film begin, most of the surviving Transformers are just scattered remnants of armies, hiding in the corners of the galaxy.
The modern animated series “Transformers: Prime” (Aligned Continuity)
Here, the focus is on the ancient history and religion:
The war has been going on for millions of years. It began long before most of the characters were even born (even Optimus himself).
The Decepticons are portrayed as a totalitarian military junta that ruled Cybertron with an iron fist for centuries, driving the Autobots underground and into the slums.
The division here is not so much social as existential: the Autobots believe in the legacy of Primus and the Allspark, while the Decepticons rely on dark energy and a cult of power, using substances such as Dark Engexon.
