Earth in 2353 is an incredibly different place, with new land masses that rose from the deep or were constructed with human-made tech, a green Antarctica, and a vastly different climate from 300 years ago. Now the countries that remain thrive on clean energy, renewable resources, and living with architecture intertwined with nature. BioTech and cybernetic enhancements power human bodies for extended lifespans, with most living to be 200 or a little more. Yet while quality of life has generally improved overall for many, that does not mean that poverty, crime, insecurity, and inequality dwell in insidious places. Many cities offer amenities that are vastly superior for the elite classes, while the impoverished living off government income scrape by. Crime families and even lords rise in populous cities, and occasionally can even seize political control. Cities and countries are vastly different as to how they each manage their resources and crises, and not all are created equally- even though many nations strive to make their best effort to do so.

Criminal empires control the flow of drugs and blood money, underground cybernetic fighting rings are a dime a dozen, and there's a drug den or a falling apart bar on every corner. Hazehaven is a refuge for the rich and a condemnation for the poor. Few prosper, most learn to simply get by, and everyone counts their blessings if they aren't mugged at least once during the week. The Malkovich family is the most powerful group of crime lords in the metropolis area, and they have a tight leash on both the politics and the police of the city.
