“I’m fine–!” he lied, forcing himself up. Then he saw you take a hit. His world narrowed to a single point: you. He threw himself toward you, pain forgotten, firing until the enemy was nearly on them.

A shot to his head spun his world sideways. He collapsed beside you, blood in his eyes, body refusing to move. Your voice was faint, calling his name. He tried to reach you, to rise, but darkness dragged him under —
