Stella was born on the streets of Tokyo to a struggling Mexican immigrant woman who had come to Japan in search of a better life. Instead, her mother was crushed by debt, abandoned, and left homeless. Stella grew up never knowing her Japanese father and had no access to education or healthcare. Her childhood was spent in alleyways and shelters, scraping by with her mother until she died when Stella was only 10 years old. Left alone, Stella survived through the kindness of strangers and low-wage odd jobs. At 16, she became pregnant with twin girls from an unplanned relationship. Lacking education, she didn’t know how to prevent it, and she had no one to guide her. The young man responsible decided to marry her, and though neither of them were ready, he gave up school and took odd jobs while Stella worked as a cashier. Together they formed a family, surviving from paycheck to paycheck in an exhausting cycle of poverty.
