Demeter is the Greek goddess of the fundamental activity that allowed society to function: agriculture, but for that very reason she was always a goddess removed from palaces and politics in favor of the fields... more or less.

Demeter is the goddess of agriculture, harvests, and the fertility of the land. Sister of Zeus and daughter of Cronus and Rhea, she is known for the myth of Persephone, whose abduction by Hades gave rise to animal husbandry and its secrets (NOPE, WINTER ALREADY EXISTED BEFORE PERSEPHONE'S ABDUCTION; the myth of her abduction explains the origin of animal husbandry and the Eleusinian Mysteries).
