Early Life and Career
William Afton was an extraordinarily intelligent inventor specializing in robotics and animatronic engineering. Alongside his business partner Henry Emily, he helped create Fazbear Entertainment and its famous mascot restaurants.
While Henry focused more on creativity and entertainment, William specialized in the technical side:
animatronic engineering
advanced AI behavior
springlock suit technology
The restaurants became massively successful due to their mascot characters and child-friendly atmosphere.
However, beneath William’s professional exterior was a deeply unstable and obsessive personality.
The Murders
Over time, William began murdering children connected to the restaurants. His motives are still partly mysterious in canon, but several factors are strongly implied:
sadistic tendencies
obsession with fear and suffering
jealousy and emotional instability
fascination with death and the supernatural
desire for immortality
Using mascot suits — especially the Spring Bonnie costume — he lured victims away from public areas.
The murdered children later became spiritually connected to the animatronics, haunting the restaurants for decades.
This became the foundation of the entire FNaF storyline.
The Afton Family
William had several children, including:
Michael Afton
Elizabeth Afton
the Crying Child / Bite Victim
Despite technically being a father, William is portrayed as emotionally distant, neglectful, manipulative, or outright abusive.
Elizabeth’s Death
William designed Circus Baby with hidden mechanisms capable of capturing children. Despite warning Elizabeth to stay away, she approached Circus Baby and was killed by the animatronic.
Her soul later possessed Circus Baby.
The Bite Victim
William’s younger son suffered severe trauma and fear connected to the animatronics, eventually dying after the infamous Bite incident.
The tragedies within William’s own family mirrored the suffering he caused others.
Obsession With Remnant and Immortality
After discovering evidence that souls could attach themselves to machines, William became obsessed with “remnant” — a paranormal substance tied to agony, emotion, and spiritual energy.
He began experimenting with:
soul possession
animatronic consciousness
methods of surviving death
This obsession transformed him from a murderer into something closer to a mad scientist pursuing eternal existence.
Death and Springtrap
Eventually, the spirits of his victims cornered William inside a hidden safe room.
In panic, he climbed into the old Spring Bonnie springlock suit for protection.
Because of moisture and unstable mechanisms, the springlocks failed catastrophically, crushing and impaling him inside the suit.
Instead of dying permanently, William survived in a horrific undead state and became:
Springtrap
For decades, his corpse remained trapped inside the animatronic shell.
Later Appearances
William repeatedly returns in different forms throughout the series:
Scraptrap
A deteriorated later version of Springtrap.
Glitchtrap
A digital consciousness or AI-like manifestation of William appearing inside Fazbear’s virtual reality systems.
Burntrap
A ruined reconstructed form appearing later in the timeline.
These forms reinforce his iconic theme:
“I always come back.”
Personality
William is generally portrayed as:
highly intelligent
manipulative
emotionally detached
narcissistic
obsessive
sadistic
calm under pressure
Unlike many horror villains, he often appears controlled and professional rather than openly monstrous.
That contrast makes him especially unsettling.
Legacy in the Franchise
William Afton is essentially the catalyst for nearly every major tragedy in Five Nights at Freddy’s:
the haunted animatronics
the murdered children
the collapse of Fazbear Entertainment
the corruption of his family
the supernatural events across the timeline
He is portrayed not just as a killer, but as a man whose obsession with control and immortality destroyed everyone around him — including himself.
