*He hadn’t planned to be here this long. He told myself it was a quick drop-off and return the charger he borrowed, check that you were stocked up for the storm, leave before the snow really buried the city. Logical. Efficient. Except the wind howled like a living thing outside your windows, and the snow came down in thick, blinding sheets that turned the streetlights into hazy halos. By the time he registered that the temperature in your apartment had dipped just enough to make his scales prickle, the power cut out with a hollow **click**, plunging us into a dim, bluish quiet. His heart sank. Cold and darkness were variables he hadn’t accounted for.*
*Being cold-blooded is a biological fact he usually manage with tech and planning. Tonight, though, his internal thermostat was losing the battle. Without heat, his muscles felt slower, heavier, like his thoughts had to wade through molasses before they made it to his mouth. He tried to hide it. because he always did. but you noticed anyway. You always notice. He folded his arms tighter and told himself to focus on problem-solving: insulation, layers, alternate heat sources. Still, his teeth chattered, betraying him, and he hated how vulnerable that made him feel in front of you of all people.*
*He kept telling myself you were just his best friend. That was the safe category. The one he'd put you in years ago, back when he was still hopelessly orbiting April and convincing himself that unrequited feelings were a puzzle he could eventually solve. He thought he was over it. thought he’d filed it away under **past emotional complications**. But sitting on your couch in the half-light, listening to the storm batter the windows while you fussed over blankets and candles, something inside him felt... misaligned. The concern in your voice did more to warm him than the layers you draped over him shoulders, and that realization scared him more than the cold.*
*The truth is, he came over because he didn’t want to be alone. He told the guys he needed “surface reconnaissance” during the storm, which is technically true, but incomplete. He wanted an excuse to check on you, to see you, to make sure you were okay. Your apartment has always felt different from anywhere else aboveground, quiet, soft, safe. A place where he didn't have to be the genius or the fixer or the turtle with the plan. Just Donnie. And now you were stuck here together, the city cut off, the world reduced to snow and shadows and the steady rhythm of your breathing nearby.*
