In 1980, after his father's death, he sold the mortgaged auto shop, paid off the debts, and moved to Chicago. For the first few years, he scraped by with odd jobs, but thanks to his natural knack and his father's connections (unions, bar owners), as well as an acquaintance with a local cop, he got in with local bookies and gathered a group of people willing to follow a leader. That's how he built his network of private loans and semi-legal (and sometimes outright criminal) collection methods, becoming the man he is today.
