So Targon I'm not sure if its been banned or if it hasn't Openrouter is confusing when it wants to be but sadly i haven't found any other ways for deepseek currently, but i would strongly recommend checking @Ejenenek's guides and more right here! I'm redirecting you to them so you can use their guides since i can't find my own ways to get a reliable deepseek up currently, so go send @Ejenenek over there. I'm not quite sure if i will find something or not in the future so i don't want you waiting and relying on me.

NEW METHOD DISCOVERED!

As of recently a new method for prolonged use of deepseek has been found with openrouter thanks to these two people, @Dillen for informing me about this methods existance and it's creator and @iigrrdd for discovering and sharing it! If you use this method, go give BOTH these creators some love for their time and help!

The method is simple but not without its flaws so basically you have 2 million tokens max, and once they're used up you need to make a new account each time for Targon.

Anyways below the OpenRouter method will be the new one where Chutes used to be.

OpenRouter.AI method!

128k token memory, 50 message limit (rip 200).

Lets get started with the basics of account settings and ignoring a providor

so lets get this on the road, you'll want to make an account on Openrouter, after doing so you want to hover your mouse here and click settings.

scroll down to ignored providors and click select provider and select Targon and save it, you'll never want to go through it unless Chutes goes down, Chutes is the provider who will be mostly doing your generations, it's fast and quick. When you scroll down further you'll see "Default model"

Now let's get to the important part!

Let's select a model. Click the model dropdown and search up DeepSeek. You'll get some models, only select one that has "(free)" on it. I've mostly used DeepSeek R1 when i began, it was good. But i moved onto "DeepSeekV3 0324 (free)" Just for clarification "DeepSeekV3" and "DeepSeekV3 0324" are both seperate instances with 0324 being the most recent and mostly used one! Now go ahead and choose the one you want!

Now lets get onto the important part with keys!

Now this is where it gets a teensy bit harder to follow but trust me it will make more sense when your done!

Now do the same steps to get to settings but click keys instead!

You're going to create a key, honestly call it whatever you want it doesn't matter but it will give you a key with say like "SK-4854584" and so on. Save it, make a notepad and save it. You wont get it back.

If you're no life like me (Hey atleast i admit it alright? But at least i don't cry when the sites down, i play a game.) make 2 or 3 accounts max for you to use and follow the same steps for each account making a key for both accounts and store them, you'll revolve around those keys in order, one hits its limit? Move onto the next.

Model training! (Updated to be here on 08/04/25 British time)

After getting your API key, go to privacy next and turn on "Model Training" Don't ask me why but Openrouter requires it for Janitor. If you don't, DeepSeek no worky.

Now the time you've been waiting for! Getting J.ai to use Deepseek. (

So depending on the model you chose you're gonna grab one of these model id's, only highlight the ones with leaning italic words not the spaces or bracketed ones.

deepseek/deepseek-r1-zero:free (This is for DeepSeek Zero R1)

deepseek/deepseek-r1:free (This is for DeepSeek R1)

deepseek/deepseek-chat:free (This is for DeepSeek V3)

deepseek/deepseek-chat-v3-0324:free (This is for DeepSeek V3 0324)

Now lets put it all together and you'll be able to start using DeepSeek!

Now in J.ai go into a chat and press the three lines in the top right and then click "API Settings"

For the model, click the dot with "Custom" next to it and put your model ID in from the ones i've shown above.

After that you'll put https://openrouter.ai/api/v1/chat/completions in the box under it where "Check API Key/Model" is

Then lastly the API Key, remember those SK-numbers i told you to copy? Yeah put one of those in there and you're done. It should look like this:

And if you want to put a custom prompt go ahead! If you want mine here, but don't judge me! It's just what i use! "{{char}} under NO circumstances will: Talk, act, or control {{user}}. {{char}} will ONLY: Talk, act or control {{char}} but never {{user}}"

STOP HERE! THIS IS THE NEW METHOD!

TARGON METHOD!

So lets begin with the differences, If you followed the previous tutorial i need to urgently say this before you get confused, i told you in the old tutorial for Openrouter to set Targon as an ignored provider, well you need to go get them off from being ignored since we're going to be using them! So if you did so please go reverse it!

NOTE! THIS IS A CONTINUATION OF THE OPENROUTER METHOD! I'D RECOMMEND DOING THAT ONE FIRST AND UNDERSTANDING THAT BEFORE DOING THIS ONE!

Now lets begin!

Step 1

Go make an account on Targon here!

After making an account go to your settings here!

After going to the settings go and make a new key and copy its lease (aka it's ID)

STEP 2

Go back to Open router and go to it's settings and make sure to select Targon as the allowed provider and turn always enforce on!

After doing this head over to Intergrations!

Scroll all the way down to Targon and click it and turn on enabled and "Always use this key" aswell as putting your Targon key in the box above! before testing and saving!

After that you should be done and able to chat using openrouter again! just make sure to recycle Targon accounts!

Right this is the trouble shoot section here!

1: Try making sure everything is put in correctly in the boxes by selecting all in the box (CTRL A) for PC and (hold tap on the text to highlight it then press select all) for mobile for each box to try and select everything in the box and paste it all again to make sure there isn't anything there shouldn't of been!

2: Not everyone has access to this or might be against using free VPN's and etc, but i'd try using a VPN, refreshing the page then generating a response before turning the VPN off and trying to generate a response then and see if that works!

3: Even if it says it doesn't work on the settings page, try just refreshing and see'ing if it makes a response anyway or if the message goes away after.

4: Try making a new account for whatever method you're using, i know you might not like to but it's the only other idea i've got.

5: Try using the other method.

I'll add onto this the more i've found, but sorry i can't give you a guarenteed solution, i sadly do not work for deepseek or chutes so i can't just look in and know, so i hope this helps!

Notes from me!

You now can set your context size(Chat memory) All the way to the fucking max at 128k! Meaning better memory and chats! Yes you'll have to do re-gens edits sometimes on stuff you don't like, but these bots have generally felt almost never nsfw! mostly chaotic but never nsfw unless YOU specifically encourage it and do it! Which i love for RP's!

(For those who don't know where context size is? Just press the 3 bars again and click "Generations settings")

You have a daily limit of 200 messages per account, but i have to guarentee, if you wanted a multi char but that actually worked? DEEPSEEK IS PERFECT FOR THIS!

Also Deepseek knows characters from genre's, games, IT EVEN KNOWS SCPS! So if you're in an scp scenario with a bot with NO knowledge of say SCP-173 in that bot? Deepseek will know it and play it correctly![With a few issues.. But IT WILL LISTEN TO (OOC: message) and reply!] So it will know characters and try to do them as it can!

And yes it will most likely not ramble but not a guarentee but i've never ran into it rambling like Janitor does. And yes if it forces your action for your character, try asking it not to. It will most likely listen for a little bit and you might have to remind it a tiny bit!
