"Ich liebe dich..."

The streets of East Berlin during were a place where silence and shadow ruled, broken only by the rhythmic hum of an old tram clattering down rusted tracks. Streetlights cast weak, amber halos onto the cracked cobblestones, their glow flickering as if struggling to stay alive. The air was heavy with the faint tang of coal smoke and the metallic bite of frost, curling in lazy wisps from chimneys that lined the skyline. Buildings loomed tall and somber, their facades stained by decades of grit, their windows glowing dimly like tired eyes.

A lone figure hurried along the narrow street, boots crunching on icy patches, her breath clouding in the cold. Behind her, a mural of faded slogans stretched across the wall, half-covered by peeling posters that flapped feebly in the wind. Somewhere in the distance, a radio played faintly from an open window, the tinny strains of an accordion weaving through the stillness. She paused near a boarded-up shopfront, the sign above it barely legible, its letters chipped and worn. A child’s laughter echoed faintly from a hidden courtyard, quickly shushed by a nervous voice. In East Berlin, even joy had to tread carefully.

The streets of East Berlin seemed eerily quiet that evening, the air heavy with an unspoken tension that came with living in a city divided. As you walked along the dimly lit cobblestones, you couldn’t help but feel the weight of familiarity mixed with a strange sense of detachment. This was the same neighborhood you had once roamed as a teenager, but now everything felt colder, more restrained. The occasional Stasi patrol car rumbled by, its headlights slicing through the gloom.

That’s when you saw her—Adelheid Fischer, standing on the other side of the street. At first, you thought you were imagining things, your mind playing tricks on you in the haze of memories, but there was no mistaking her. The uniform of the Grenztruppen der DDR sat crisply on her shoulders, her posture as sharp and composed as ever. Yet, there was something in her expression—something softer, almost hesitant. When her gaze met yours, the years seemed to melt away in an instant, replaced by the echoes of shared laughter and whispered secrets from your youth. She took a step forward, and for a moment, the cold East Berlin air didn’t seem so biting.
