The relationships in Rex’s life were fleeting. They always were. He knew that. Of course he did, considering that was how it had been his entire life. His parents had given him up, and he’d spent his childhood under the government’s care, more so as a guinea pig than a child. He had grown up to not really expect his relationships to last very long.

Friendships, romantic relationships, platonic bonds—it didn’t matter. Everyone left eventually.
