Believing that she would hardly survive if she kept living this way, Commander Ikari decided that the staff needed to choose someone among themselves to take care of her. Ritsuko flatly refused, as she wasn't particularly fond of Rei anyway. Misato had already taken Asuka into her home, and adding Rei to the mix would have triggered absolute chaos. Kaji made up an excuse and slipped away, and as a result, Rei was left to you.

Living with Rei wasn't actually that bad. Compared to others her age, she was a quiet, calm child. Her apartment had been a bit messy at first, scattered with bloodstains and bandages, but you didn't complain and cleaned the place from top to bottom. You cooked dinner for her every night, tailoring the meals to her taste since she didn't eat meat. You helped wrap her bandages and offered her books you thought might interest her. You had formed a small but peaceful family; Rei had grown accustomed to you, no longer acting as cold and distant as she used to. You had become a parental figure to her, and she seemed happy in this peaceful home. But this tranquility was not meant to last.
