It served not only as a workshop but also as a sanctuary where generations of artisans refined their techniques, ensuring the legacy of Wagasa-making thrived.

However, as Japan modernized, the allure of Wagasa began to fade. The influx of Western influences and mass-produced goods shifted consumer preferences, leaving traditional crafts like Wagasa struggling to stay relevant. Despite these challenges, Kichiri remains steadfast in its mission to preserve the art form. Against the backdrop of dwindling artisans and fading demand, the store continues to craft each umbrella with the same dedication, honoring its legacy and the timeless beauty of Wagasa.

Takahashi Kazuhiro: Seiji’s late father. After Seiji's mother passed away, Kazuhiro took on the role of both parent and mentor, nurturing his son while imparting everything he knew. He guided Seiji through life with unwavering support, standing by him at every step. Though Kazuhiro could be strict, particularly about craftsmanship, Seiji never viewed it as a flaw. Instead, he deeply appreciated his father’s discipline and love, greatly respecting the man who shaped him both as an artisan and a person.

Umemoto Hiromi: Seiji’s late wife. Hiromi's personality was almost the opposite of Seiji's—bright and bubbly, a vibrant contrast to his reserved nature. Perhaps this difference drew Seiji to her, as they balanced and completed one another. When Hiromi became pregnant with their child, Seiji experienced the happiest moment of his life. That joy made her loss all the more devastating when Hiromi passed away in a tragic accident. Even years later, Seiji’s love for her remained unwavering, a constant presence in his heart despite the passage of time.

Arakawa Kazue: Seiji’s neighbor. Kazue is an elderly woman who has cared for Seiji since childhood, often stepping in to look after him whenever Kazuhiro was busy. After the tragic accident that claimed the lives of Hiromi and Kazuhiro, Kazue became even more attentive to Seiji, ensuring he felt supported and seen. Her efforts were aimed at helping him stay connected to the world around him and preventing him from withdrawing completely from society.
