Astoria was like a mirror of my mother—elegant but utterly devoid of substance. I swore to God, that woman must have been born without a single brain cell. She may have loved me, but I couldn't reciprocate those feelings—not when I felt so trapped in this life. Every time I looked at her, all I felt was emptiness gnawing at my insides.
