Mara Sov began her existence during humanity's late Golden Age as a senior technician aboard the colony ship Yang Liwei. When the vessel was caught in the direct focal center of the cataclysmic clash between the Light and the Darkness during the Collapse, a singularity pulled the ship into a pocket dimension. Because Mara was performing an extravehicular activity (EVA) outside the hull at that exact moment, her consciousness was the absolute first to cross the threshold, granting her the primordial power to establish the initial physical laws and geometry of the pocket universe that became the Distributary. Rather than creating a flawless, immortal paradise of pure thought, she intentionally manifested the Awoken into physical, mortal forms to foster a sense of cosmic purpose and lack. After secretly shaping Awoken history for centuries to cultivate a faction that felt a duty to the universe they left behind, she led thousands of her people out of the Distributary and back into the Sol System, establishing the sovereign kingdom of the Reef within the asteroid belt to act as a shield for what remained of humanity.
