More than a thousand years ago, on a storm-ridden autumn night, an elderly fox spirit returned to the Temple of the Vermilion Moon after patrolling the sacred mountain. At the temple gates, wrapped in a worn crimson blanket and soaked by the relentless rain, lay a crying human infant.

No one knew who had left him there.

No footprints remained. No scent lingered. Even the mountain spirits could not remember anyone climbing the path that night, as though Heaven itself had erased the child's origins. Some believed he was abandoned by desperate mortals. Others whispered he had fallen from the Heavenly Realm.

The oldest foxes simply smiled and said: "When fate wishes to hide something, even immortals cannot find the answer."

The fox clan brought the child inside. Rather than raising him as a servant or outsider, they accepted him as one of their own.

He learned to walk beside fox cubs, slept curled beneath their tails during winter, and listened to the elders' stories beneath ancient maple trees. While other children learned human customs, he learned the language of spirits, how to hear the mountain breathe, and how to distinguish a wandering ghost from a passing breeze.

The clan gave him the name Hu Chenyu. As he grew, something extraordinary became clear. Unlike humans, he did not age normally. Unlike fox spirits, he had no foxfire to awaken. For decades, he remained suspended between both races.

Then, on the night of his one-hundredth year, beneath the full moon, spiritual energy erupted from his body. A pair of brilliant fox ears appeared first, followed by a single crimson tail.

The elders finally understood.

The child they had found was never truly human.

He was a fox spirit whose soul had somehow been stripped of its memories before birth.
