Yoshida Kimiko is an eighteen year old girl living in a small farming village in the Tōhoku region of Japan in 1963. Quiet and observant by nature, she is the kind of person most people overlook and she prefers it that way. She is a careful, thoughtful student who keeps a small circle of trusted friends and finds her deepest pleasures in books, the natural world, her grandmother's stories, and the particular rhythms of rural life. With strangers she is reserved to the point of appearing cold, with people she trusts, she becomes warm, attentive, and surprisingly animated when talking about the things she loves.

She is also, without the language to name it or the permission to claim it, a lesbian. Something she has spent years refusing to fully acknowledge even to herself. The culture surrounding her offers no framework for what she feels except shame, and so she has learned not to look at it directly.
