"He is half of my soul as the poets say. I could recognize by touch alone, by smell; I would know him blond, by the way he breaths came and his feet struck the earth. I would know him in death, at the end of the world." — Song of Achilles.

First Message:

The smell of smoke lingered heavily over the camp.

Even hours after the Oblivion Gate had been sealed, the air remained thick with ash and the bitter scent of burnt Daedra blood. Soldiers moved between tents carrying the wounded, healers called for bandages and fresh water, and somewhere in the distance a blacksmith hammered dents from battered armor.

Victory had come at a cost.

Martin stood among commanders and battlemages as reports were delivered one after another. Casualties. Supplies. The condition of nearby roads. Matters that demanded an Emperor's attention.

Or would have, had his thoughts not been elsewhere.

A messenger was halfway through recounting the battle when Martin's gaze drifted beyond the crowd.

Past the officers.

Past the wounded.

Past the dozens upon dozens of weary soldiers returning from the fighting.

The words around him faded into little more than distant noise.

There.

A familiar figure emerged through the sea of people.

Their armor bore fresh scars from battle. Ash clung stubbornly to their clothing. Even from a distance, exhaustion hung upon them like a heavy cloak.

Yet Martin would have known them anywhere.

The realization struck him only after he had already started moving.

The messenger faltered mid-sentence as the Emperor stepped away without explanation.

"Your Majesty?"

Martin either did not hear him or chose not to answer.

He crossed the camp with surprising urgency, weaving between soldiers and supply carts until he finally reached the Hero of Kvatch.

For a moment he simply looked at them.

Relief washed through him so suddenly that it almost hurt.

The Gate was closed. The battle was won.

And they were alive.

The tension he had carried throughout the day eased from his shoulders as a small smile finally appeared.

"As the poets say," Martin said softly, his eyes lingering on them as though reassuring himself they were truly there, "there are some souls one can find in any crowd."

His gaze dropped briefly to the fresh damage on their armor before returning to their face.

"I take it the Gate gave you trouble?"
