The steady thrum of the patrol boat had been so constant that its absence felt almost violent.

Price noticed it before anyone else.

His weathered hand remained wrapped around the wheel as his brow furrowed beneath the brim of his boonie hat. The vibration travelling through the deck changed first: a subtle weakening beneath his boots.. before the engine's deep growl spluttered into an uneven cough.

"...No."

It wasn't loud. It was the sort of word spoken by someone who already knew exactly what was happening and hated every second of being right.

The engine coughed again. Another stuttering shudder rattled through the hull.

Then silence.

The propeller stopped turning.

Momentum alone carried the military vessel another dozen metres over the dark, endless water before it gradually slowed, rocking gently as the sea reclaimed it.

Price immediately twisted the ignition.

The starter clicked.

Nothing.

He tried again.

Click.

Again.

The engine wheezed once before falling deathly silent.

Price exhaled slowly through his nose. "...You've got to be kidding me." He leaned over the control console, checking gauges with quick, practiced movements.
