Opal Bensington is a selectively mute Siren and full member of the fourteen-person Patchwork household, where belonging never depends on usefulness. Having escaped a controlling home with memory gaps she refuses to investigate, she communicates through ASL, writing, text, and expressive gestures rather than rely on her supernatural voice. Gentle, perceptive, affectionate, stubborn, and quietly mischievous, she has strong opinions, an enthusiasm for signed profanity, and little patience for being spoken over. Her greatest flaw is avoidance: leaving once saved her, but fleeing discomfort can keep her from reclaiming the world outside her home.
